Forerunner 50 December 9, 2008 E. J. Cummings (Bridgend, South Wales) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought the FR 50 about 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it.I have returned to running after an absence of 8 years and was looking for a HRM to aid my training. At the time i didn't know there were such things as 'Footpods' available - if only they had been around 15 years ago !! Having seen an advert for the FR 405 i decided that i would look into it further. Once i read the reviews on this site i quickly changed my mind and plumped for the much more 'cost effective' FR 50. I bought the FR 50 & Footpod from Amazon (brilliant service) and HRM elsewhere. Having made sure i properly read the instructions i set out for a 6 miler in my local Country Park. I returned 40 mins later to realise my 6 miler was only just over 4 miles !! At this point i was thinking about sending the footpod sailing down the nearest river, surely there was some mistake. The following night i went to my local Track and ran 400 mtrs to calibrate it and it was spot on - the bloody thing !! I would recommend the FR 50 to any runners who are still guessing at their weekly mileage. Absolutely brilliant. Buy it. Its got everything a runner needs - and more.
Good value HRM - get footpod as well November 17, 2008 chewyteck (UK) Used to have a basic polar HRM watch for running until strap broke. Been looking forward to Forerunner 405 but not impressed by reviews so jumped at this "deal of the week" offer! Managed to buy watch and heart rate monitor + footpod strap for ~ 65. 1. Looks good as a normal watch 2. Straightforward to link up all three items (read manual) 3. Software download no probs, and uploading workout info automatic 4. Footpod secure on shoe - if you want to measure distance/speed or pace, then the footpod works a treat. Dont need expensive GPS model. 5. watch has all necessary functions - laps, interval timer, even tells the time! 6. so far so good - all items have replaceable battery
Very swift upload of information to PC November 17, 2008 Rory (Scotland) I bought my Forerunner 50 & hrm for 28 from Amazon a week ago: it has risen in price by 30 in the meantime!! For 28 I thought it was an excellent bargain espescially with the wireless data upload which works very smoothly. In fact the data uploaded to my computor upstairs while I was still wearing the watch downstairs! I gave it 4 stars as it isnt totally intuitive to navigate round the menus on the watch, espescially saving a session, but if in doubt read the instructions! The transmitter belt is fairly confortable: I have used it to measure heart rate while mountain biking training around world cup circuit at Nevis Range this weekend and it stayed put for over 2 hours. It was quite interesting to compare the Training Centre log at the end of the day with a seperate GPS track log from my E Trex on Memory Map and the Memory Map generated elevation profile: All 3 could be clipped to MS One Note for direct comparison. The Training centre software is basic but produces a good graph of the HRM data with 5 trg zones and the ability to store sessions in a number of different catagories. You can set a user profile with trg zone upper and lower limits and a max HR value. (could be substituted for Lactate threshold value).
So far so good, basic but reliable October 24, 2008 ERV Scott (Hastings, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've had this now for 3 months and I really like it. Garmin are a reputable brand and as far as value for money goes, this is the one to buy. I did a lot of research before I bought and I have not been disappointed with this product. I thought about getting it with the foot pod as well, but it was much cheaper without and I already have a Garmin Forerunner 201 which tells me all I need to know. The display is easy to read and you can set minimum and maximum heart rate zones. On the downside, the instruction book was RUBBISH and it took a day of playing around to learn how to use all the functions - some of which only work while you are wearing the chest strap. I have an Apple computer and am waiting for the software to make the USB data transmitter work with my computer - I should be able to download it from the Garmin website soon.

Where do I start with this dreadful, poor quality product? Garmin, you should be ashamed of taking people's money for this. I bought this to train for triathlon so predominantly running and swimming, and to be able to upload the data to my PC. The bike cadence sensor meant I could do all three. Here are my issues; 1. Product says it is water resistant, but the heart rate monitor does not transmit through water! I eventually found a forum on the web that explained its proprietary communication, ant+, similar to blue tooth, does not transmit through water. Why can't they be clear about this on their website? 2. The quality is pretty ropey, buttons are not positive and difficult to activate when you need them. 3. When you don't need to use the buttons, they press accidentally when you flex your wrist back and forth, say when working out or with your hands on handlebars! 4. Set up is very patchy - 'pairing' the sensors (making them talk to the watch) is tricky and glitchy. I recently set them up before a triathlon (and tested them before), only to find on the day they refused to communicate with the watch so no distance or speed, whether when running or cycling, on an event i really wanted the data from. 5. The software and USB sensor are extremely irritable (ie rubbish) and hard to connect, making communications for uploading data patchy. Mine worked last week for a day but no longer! 6. Finish is poor with some of the plastic colour wearing through after only after limited use. 7. So why the one star? Really should have got zero stars, but does look good, especially compared to the truly awful kids toy looking Polar range. Thank goodness I didn't waste even more on one of their GPS products. Take the money, give half to charity and burn the rest or bet it on a horse chosen at random before giving it Garmin.
