Bulls-eye collection - almost! November 24, 2000

A fine way to get to know some of John Wayne's finest westerns. "True Grit" is a delight in every way and earned Wayne his first academy award in '69. It's a thrill to watch "the duke" playing a one-eyed fatman who still sparkles in the end. "El Dorado" is another class-A western, directed by Howard Hawks as a follow-up to his famous "Rio Bravo" from '59. "The man who shot Liberty Valance" is a classic western by John Ford and belongs in every western collection. This one is in black and white by the way. The only one, I'm not so fond of is "The Sons of Katie Elder", very loosely directed and with many stupid and thoughtless errors (find them yourself). Still, Wayne and Martin together makes it worth seeing - at least once! All in all: 3 from top drawer and one from middle drawer make this collection very recommendable!
