A great (and unjustly overlooked) Vietnam war film. November 21, 2008 robertsmike (Oxon, England) Just had to write this after seeing the earlier review. I've seen this several times and not only is it still a really great war/action film but it's also a truly thought-provoking and very moving drama. Gene Hackman is marvellous here (as always) and we see through his eyes just how real war becomes to him and how once on the ground he really appreciates what others have to go through to try to rescue him. Danny Glover is always superb so it's no suprise to see how good he is here but both Jerry Reed as the commander and David Marshall Grant both do fantastic work too. I would heartily recommend anyone with an interest in war films and especially Vietnam/Helicopter themed ones to see it. Twenty years on it's still a VERY GOOD film !.
A Top Soldier Who Got His Own Men Killed! June 9, 2008 Inmi Opinion (Cadiz,Spain) 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
Gene Hackman plays the part of real life, Lt.Col.Iceal Hambleton who was apparently one of the US.Army's top "thinkers" during the Vietnam War and who having thought out this particular reconnaissance plan ready for an attack the folllowing day on the Vietcong, insisted on going along on the flight. This was sheer lunacy and should have been blocked immediately by HIS Senior Officers because he was too valuable an officer to lose through either accident or capture. Also he had NEVER SEEN ACTIVE SERVICE IN HIS WHOLE CAREER!Needless to say,his plane was hit,he ejected and countless men lost their lives trying to rescue him. This DVD tells that story and the real Iceal Hambleton US.Army Rtd. has the input into the film.I SHOULD have believed HE WOULD be too ashamed to make such a film that cost so many lives for a mistake he made in insisting in going on that flight in the first place!
