Funny as ... March 18, 2007 ShoppingQuine (Edinburgh, UK) This film was a wonderful discovery and proved to be a great family film for us and teenage daughter. She said she wasn't sure when it began if she was going to like it but stuck with it and loved it. None of us speak French so relied on the subtitles to a certain extent. However the actor playing M. Pignon is superb - masterly comic timing and you couldn't help but watch him. The whole cast delivered great perfomances while the plot developed at a good pace, spinning the situation further out of control. We all laughed out loud. I can highly recommend this comedy if you are looking for something better than average.
Extremely funny film with a message September 25, 2000 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
Carries on the great tradition of French farce, only this time transposed to the cinema. A lot of laughs but it also tell us to treat everyone with respect, even people we might initially think are jerks (cons). I particularly enjoyed the contrasting social milieux of the two main characters. M. Veber, well done!
Enormously entertaining film May 9, 2000 18 out of 20 found this review helpful
A bunch of mates hold periodical dinner parties where they compete to see who can invite the biggest "con" (better translated as "idiot" rather than its more anatomically correct English equivalent). Our hero (the always excellent Thierry L'Hermitte) finds a world champion "con" who bores people with stories of his fantastic collection of matchstick models, competing with a collector of Aboriginal boomerangs and various others. However, this particular con is a lot worse than he possibly imagined. An entertaining and well constructed film. Suffers a bit from being a direct stage adaptation (most of the action happening in one room, with stagey, contrived entrances and exits), and some odd translations in the subtitles, but excellent stuff nevertheless.
A hilarious yet thought provoking film full of twists March 30, 2000 alice@moorwalker.com (England) 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video- the characters have been well cast and play their parts with enthousiasm and skill. I thought that, in particular, the character of M. Pignon was performed outstandingly. Continuous bursts of hilarity and unexpected twists leave us constantly in anticipation, yet a final tone of seriousness mixed in with this comedy gives it extreme depth and meaning. I would definitely recommend this film; it is an asset to French cinema.
