Amazon.co.uk Review In a parallel universe, everyone would want to know Whatever Happened to Harold Smith?, because although this unpretentious British comedy didn't get even a fraction of the attention lavished on The Full Monty, it turns out to be an overlooked gem of a film. In 1977, retired Yorkshire codger Harold (Tom Courtenay) causes a stir when he was inspired by Uri Gellar to rediscover his own telepathic/telekinetic talents. During the investigation of an old folk's home accident, Harold's son Vince (Michael Legge) falls for workmate Joanne (Laura Fraser) whose scientist father (Stephen Fry) is asked to disprove the miracles. In a clash between the confused youth torn between disco and punk, Vince finds out all sorts of family secrets, including what his mum (Lulu) is really up to each night at the local nightclub (a fantastic set-piece to rival Boogie Nights). The story's elements tie together in a consistently charming homage to the 70s: wallpaper, flares, hair, shirts and a Starsky and Hutch car dress the background; the wardrobe of "The Turd Tache" (David Thewlis) colours the foreground. Other details make it all terrific fun, such as Mark Williams hosting the inspired Thornton Tonight show, and cameos from John Craven, Angela Rippon, Jan Leeming, Keith Chegwin, and even Alan Whicker! --Paul Tonks

What a pleasant surprise! A truly funny British film with some great acting - even from Lulu. Just buy/rent it and watch it - you'll not regret it. It certainly is up there with Four Weddings and a Funeral.

A really lovely British film ,set in Sheffield about a young man and his father, the young man is going through the trials and tribulations of first love and identity crises whilst his dad's ability to use his mind to move things, stop watches and read minds is getting him into all sorts of trouble. Great film would definitely watch again!

I love this film! It is a, somewhat, unknown British movie that should be up there with "Four Weddings" and "Billy Elliott" (to name but a few). However, this little gem seems to have slipped the net. It is packed with laughs from beginning to end. Very, funny and very, very entertaining.
Another, but unknown excellent British Comedy May 2, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is one of a sucession of British Comedies that unlike others never really hit the big time. Sadly for the Cinema Viewers, but luckily for you, this Comedy set in 1970's Sheffield is a story of fifteen minutes of fame for Harold Smith against a back drop of his family antics. The man who can levitate Tourtises is challanged to prove it on TV but will he in the face of adverese consequences? What this film, you will enjoy it!
