Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Worth seeing if you are interested in 1930s German society.   July 8, 2001

A 1930s overtly socialist Brecht film censored by the Nazis, but why? This film accurately critiques the state of German society in a highly volatile era of history. Poverty, unemployment, depression, homelessness and abortion are juxyaposed by the films socialist goals of community, sport and the coming together of workers. Some excellent montage sequences and fantastic music add to the chaos depicted. Some deeply moving and tragic sections, notably the beginning, and a rather pessimistic but frank ending as the characters face up to the reality that nothing eve really changes, power can never be with the people.
