5 out of 5 stars Is my search in vain ?   October 29, 2006

Knowing political analogy, incisive script, great acting , but primarily a gripping edge of your seat drama from one of the great movie directors.
Why is it that movie companies seem eager to release so many mediocre movies on to DVD yet this masterpiece remains unavailable.
Please , please release on DVD !

5 out of 5 stars A Post Vietnam Thriller from the master Robert Altman   August 2, 2005
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

This tense post Vietnam thriller stars Burt Lancaster as a dissaffected Vietnam vet General Lawrence Dell. Breaking free from prison with a motley crew of prisoners, Dell and his accomplices take over a US Titan missile site; Silo 3.
Dell has been framed for trying to tell the truth about some of the actions of the US in Vietnam and the policy of acceptable deaths of US military.
Lawrence Dell has worked on the missile systems so overriding the inhibitors and cut-offs of the missiles is accomplished with just a few hair raising moments.
Dell is pitted against General Martin MacKensie (Richard Widmark) who is determined to retake Silo 3 and make sure that Lawrence Dell does not reveal the military involvement in covert Vietnam operations. Altnam's use of split screen to show the view of both protagonists is novel. Some people have railed against his use of split screen, I think it heightens the tension.
Dell thinks that the military has been keeping information of the Vietnam operations from the President and this proves to be the case.
Dell forces the President to come to Silo 3 to complete the negotiations and release information to the public about these covert operations.
Meanwhile MacKensie is intent on killing Dell and company before allowing him to launch his missiles. To this end he sends in an undercover team to place a suitcase sized atomic weapon inside the silo.
The team accidentally trip an alarm in Silo 3 and Dell starts the launch programme, only stopping when the President agrees to come to negotiate. In a last ditch attempt to take out Dell and the rest of the team, MacKensie arranges a crack hit squad to cover the Silo for the meeting of Dell and the President. I will not spoil the surprise ending for you.
Robert Altman touches on many topics. Covert US Military operations, Post Vietnam, Atomic weapons, CIA, State Department. This movie is probably too uncomfortable for an American audience especially anyone who lived through or knew people involved in Vietnam. Personally I sat on the edge of my seat throughout this movie.
