The Guilty will be PUNISHED February 20, 2004 Mr T A Pearson (Plymouth, Devon United Kingdom) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I first saw this film when i was 12 and am still a big fan of it 6 years later. And if your a big action fan like myself then this is a must-see. Based around a Stan Lee comic (wirter of Hulk etc), Frank Castle, a cop who's family has been killed by gangsters wages a one-man, five-year war against crime in an effort to gain retribution for the slaughter of his family. However, his crusade is altered when the ruthless Yakuza enters the picture in an attempt to gain control of the streets. There are very few dull moments with action from start to finish. The Mise-en-scene is reminiscent of The Crow starring Brandon Lee and the film is supported by a great soundtrack. Lundgren plays an non-stereotypical role, different from other roles he played around the time (He-man!!!!) but is perfectly cast to play the main man and is undoubtedly his best performance. Especially the emotional scene in the prison where he meets his old partner from 5 years before. This film is very underrated but has all the hallmarks of a great action film, from wall-to-wall violence, a good plot with plenty of twists and the classic one-liners that would befit Arnie himself! In my view this can stand alongside the great action films such as Terminator II and Die Hard.
the punisher November 13, 2003 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
this is an excellent film. plenty of action and revenge. Dolph is dark and brooding as the punisher. I need the dvd as my vhs is wearing out. A must buy for action/comic book fans
I loved it. April 4, 2003 Mr. A. P. Venables 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I used to have this film on video and I have to tell you that I really loved. If you want to watch a decent action movie look no further. Within ten minutes five people have been stylishly killed and by the thirty minute mark you realise that this is about as a no nonsense action film as you're going to get. It is a B-movie and there isn't an Oscar winner but it is probably the best picture Dolph Lundgren has done so far.Dolph Lundgren is the Punisher an ex-cop determined to kill as many mafia gangsters as possibible before being he himself is killed or captured. At the beginning of the story he has killed 125 people and shows no signs of slowing down. However he has to make some choices when a new, more ruthless japanese mafia move in. Unlike the Death Wish films the film does not condone the viglantes actions as he is arrested by the police and is about to face the electric chair. There is wonderful scene in the prison cell where he contronts his former best friend. This scene is as powerful as any A-list film. Parts of the film are cheat and it isn't for everyone. But for me this is great "Terminator" style action film with the boring bits removed.
