Its in him so its got to come out. June 30, 2008 Roger T. Duke (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a lifelong fan of AFL and must confess that this album has taken a few listens to grow on me. He could have chosen so many to re-do from his amazing back catalogue. I would have liked to hear a reworking of Hard Hat Boogie or 3 Step Shuffle from the yet to be released on CD (I hope), "Mega Shebang" Album. I like the sax on Wide Eyed and Legless from Frank Meade which adds something over and above the original. The Amen Corner stuff he does in his live shows still sound good and needs the brass which does not feature in his live gigs. I agree the great man is not being properly promoted. I have seen one HMV ad for the album, none for the tour and as for Glastonbury I find it strange this guy who has worked with virtually every decent musician on the planet is put on the accoustic stage and not the pyramid stage.I can only hope he has widened his audience and gets a spot on "Later" in the autumn IN HIS OWN RIGHT as he has been on loads with other people.I would have thought Clapton might have made an appearance to help boost sales a bit, but then Andy doesn't really need him. This boy from Cardiff can play! Here's to the next tour and album. In the meantime this is a great listen.
RECOGNITION FOR A BRITISH ROCK LEGEND June 23, 2008 P. Clack (WITNEY, OXFORDSHIRE United Kingdom) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Andy Fairweather Low ,came to fame with Amen Corner, then a sting of classic solo album, long stint as Eric Clapton guitarist, more recently on Roger Waters world tours. Then with a new label in Proper willing to promote his exceptional music,a quite brilliant album a year or so back in Sweet Soulful Music, a great ongoing tour and now this. His greatest songs rerecorded with his current band and a few other musicians and we have one stunning album. The voice is great,he's a top drawer guitar player,a consistently good songwriter as said a solid and tight band we get this album,a total and pure delight from beginning to end fourteen great tracks from hits like Wide Eyed And Legless,Bend Me Shape Me,La Booga Rooga,Gin House Blues and Spider Jiving.Go on get a copy send Andy straight to no.1 with what is total joy and great fun,one we're gonna boogie along too.If Neil Diamond goes to the top of the charts this definitely deserves to join him there, fabulous album from a British Rock n Blues legend.Oh and it says on the cover 'AS SEEN ON TV' really hope thats true, get him on and gert some live music at its best into our living rooms.Oh hes also at Glastonbury so come on BBC get the great man into your weekends coverage.
Getting even better... June 19, 2008 Nick.E (Manchester, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A really nice album - wasn`t` sure about re-recording the old Amen Corner tracks (I wasn`t even born first time round) but I actually prefer the new AFL versions. But if the album is good then as a live act Andy FL is stunning - I was privileged to be at his Burgess Hill gig last week - what a brilliant entertainer, What I and others at the gig can`t understand is the lack of publicity the tour and album get (if any!). The other thing everyone remarked on was AFL`s guitar work - superb - to be fair the whole band were brilliant, but why doesn`t he release an album featuring more of his stylish guitar skills - surely it would be huge! Thoroughly recommend the album, and the gigs are a real treat - I`ve booked to see him again in London.
Don't think about it, buy it! June 16, 2008 Moonraker (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This CD is a must have for AFL fans, but I'm just not sure about the way he is being promoted at the moment. He is currently doing a tour of the UK although I haven't seen one ad for it. This collection features work from his solo career and from Amen Corner days but is re-recorded with his current band which the CD doesn't really make clear. They are very good (except for the horrid sax solo in Wide Eyed and Legless) I am probably being naive here but if I think wouldn't it be good if some of the artists that Andy has worked with over the years returned the favour and played on this. Eric Clapton, BB King on lead guitar and Roger Waters on bass just to mention a couple. It would give it a higher profile and help sales. AFL needs to be given real exposure, many Clapton fans would love this if they got to hear it. I tell you another idea- Eric doing an album of AFL songs! Wouldn't that be great! Back to the album, Andy's voice is just as good as it ever was and he is one hell of a guitarist. Pure vintage quality, great songs like Champagne Melody, La Booga Rooga and Spider Jiving. This guy has written a whole ton of fantastic songs with real tunes, You just don't get those any more. I have have just seen him on his tour, great as ever, but in Burgess Hill for Christs sake! Should be filling the Albert Hall if there were any justice in this world.
Outstanding June 9, 2008 D. Rout 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Saw Andy Thursday June 5th and would fully endorse the previous review. Have only recently re-discovered his back catalogue, having bought CD Sweet Soulful Music - which hasn't left the CD player for almost a month. Truly outstanding and well worth seeing the tour if you get the chance. So good in fact, off to them a 2nd time at the end of June.
