The book is very good and quite a romantic story set in harsh times. Although the movie of the fifties is quite good, I find this Australian production even better. It would be great to have it on DVD suitable for various regions, so that we all can enjoy this excellent aussie classic. I did ask the ABC shops, they knew the story, but it was not in stock, or available in any form.
A must for DVD..... Masterpiece!!! May 15, 2008 Sir Garg (Cheshire, England) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This version of A Town Like Alice the second adapted screen offering of the 1950 novel by the English author Nevil Shute. In 1981, A Town Like Alice was adapted into a popular television miniseries, starring Helen Morse and Bryan Brown(with the late Gordon Jackson as Noel Strachan). It was broadcast internationally: in the United States, it was shown as part of the PBS series Masterpiece Theatre. Previously filmed in 1956 with Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch. This is now considered one of the best aussie dramas of the 80's and has yet to be put onto DVD....
