A wonderful contemplation ! July 7, 2008 amazon reader 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
CONTEMPLATION IN A CLOISTER ! That the calm and the serenity conveyed by these chants, which have survived for approximately 1,500 years, is still relevant today, can be readily appreciated by the fact this recording stayed at the top of the best seller list an inordinately long period of time upon its release. In addition, if one has a sense of history, listening to this music is like peering through a window into the distance past. The intervening hundreds of years seem to melt away. Listening to this fascinating CD, one is transported several hundred years back in time to the peace and serenity of a medieval cloister. Gregorian chant has a mystical quality all its own; there is no instrumental to complicate the pure tonal quality of voices united in praise of God. The result, as recorded by the monks, is incredibly relaxing and de-stressing. I could listen to this CD for hours on end without ever tiring of it. This music is haunting. Just to think, before any popular or classical music was ever dreamt of, there was this. The human voice, chanting in praise to God. Very deep. No matter what your taste in music, buy this. The cd is perfect for those reflective times in your life. Times when you need to meditate and relax. Just let the sound encompass you. You will not be disappointed. Gregorian Chant is not 'sung' but rather prayed. The spirit of Gregorian Chant has been captured and presented here by the Monks. These good men are true fathers of the chant yet are childlike in their prayers to the Heavenly Father. The monastic life of prayer and submission to the Divine is fully captured in every detail. The brief and simple organ intonement followed by the distant noise of a monk's bench seat before prayers like the Lauda Sion speak volumes of the simple day to day life of Monasticism. The bells before and during the Te Deum (To God we Give Thanks) are reminiscent of a child trying with everything he can to get the Father's attention . . . to give a simple thank you. The entire album plunges one into the silence of the soul: prayer, where the key to the heart of God is unlocked. Throughout the CD the sounds of the monk's movements are captured. Unlike other expensive sacred works, this CD captures the surrounding 'noise' and manages to remind the listener of the embodiment of prayer - the soul animating the body in intimate communication with God. ....A German reviewer living in Muscat/Oman, working in Abu Dhabi and Dubai/ U.A. Emirates, and travelling the Gulf region (Quatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia) and all over the Middle East for business reasons. My friends and my customers in Arabia enjoy to listen to this CD!
