Amazon.co.uk Review The third film in the The Mummy series freshens the franchise up by setting the action in China. There, the discovery of an ancient emperor's elaborate tomb proves a feather in the cap of Alex O'Connell (Luke Ford), a young archaeologist and son of Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello, taking over the role from Rachel Weisz). Unfortunately, a curse that turned the emperor (Jet Li) and his army into terra cotta warriors buried for centuries is lifted, and the old guy prepares for world domination by seeking immortality at Shangri La. The O'Connells barely stay a step ahead of him (climbing through the Himalaya mountains with apparent ease), but the action inevitably leads to a showdown between two armies of mummies in a Chinese desert. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor has a lot to offer: a supporting cast that includes the elegant Michelle Yeoh, Russell Wong, and Liam Cunningham, the unexpected appearance of several Yeti, and a climactic battle sequence that is nightmarishly weird but compelling. On the downside, the charm so desperately sought in romantic relationships, as well as comic turns by John Hannah (as Evelyn's rascal brother), is not only absent but often annoying. Rarely have witty asides in the thick of battle been more unwelcome in a movie. Rob Cohen's direction is largely crisp if sometimes curious (a fight between Fraser and Jet Li keeps varying in speed for some reason), but his vision of Shangri La, in the Hollywood tradition, is certainly attractive. --Tom Keogh

OK film, but DVD sucks December 3, 2008 Mel - London 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This isn't a review of the film - which is OK, its a criticism of the DVD release. How come the US gets a 2 disc set with loads of behind the scene documentaries, and all we get is a commentary and a few deleted scenes? I have no doubt this will get a Special Edition release next year, so if you have to own it wait for that. Universal studios are always short changing customers in the UK, so send them a message and tell 'em where they can stick it!
Curse of the the Trilogy November 29, 2008 A. Bristow (UK) Could this be an utterly soul-less movie for the sake of producing a trilogy? If so, I hope it's the end for this franchise. Rachel Weisz's creation of Evie is completely destroyed in the hands of ham-actress Maria Bello, who transforms the feisty but principled wife into a greedy action heroine more suited to a Terminator movie. The script and plot are laughable - there isn't a scrap of tension or excitement. The finale is all too contrived and rushed, to the point you ask yourself "is that it?"

Why Brendan why? November 24, 2008 J. A. Walls (Richmond Upon Thames) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved the first 2 Mummy films, I loved the humour, the story line the actors and the fact that they didn't take themsleves too seriously. So why why why did I put myself through the misery and shame of this movie? Everything about it is wrong. The grown up kid, the varying accents (you know who you are) the plot holes are embarrasing, even the acting is cheesy without a hint of irony. I'm the one person who tends to like the movies others think aren't that good, but even I can't bail out this film. If anybody out there decides to try and find another Mummy, I seriously suggest leaving it alone and walking away rather than make a fourth movie. I've given it 2 stars because it only had 2 stars; John Hannah and Brendan Fraser.
