Amazon.co.uk Review You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --Robert Horton

Iron clad disc: a must for Bluray owners December 3, 2008 Adam The superhero movies are really varying in quality. Some truly are excellent (Xmen 1 and 2, Transformers), others have barely anything to tell us (Fantastic 4, Daredevil, etc.). In my view Iron man clearly falls in the first category. Firstly because Robert Downey Jr doesn't take the role too seriously and has the charisma. Of course the story is not perfect, but it hold together and we all wish there were more action scenes such as the fighter jet battle. But at the end of the day, the image quality is stunning (a bit too noisy as mentioned in a earlier review) but really demonstrates what bluray is about. I've seen it on a Pioneer 50" plasma and it is nothing short of amazing. The disc interactivity is also nice with HD extras. Clearly it is must have for any Bluray owner, along with Pixar's Cars, Enchanted or Casino Royale in terms of image and sound quality. Buy it, if you are keen for superior image/sound quality, there's no way you'll regret it!
Incredible Ironman! December 2, 2008 C. Kershaw (Blackburn, England) I didnt see this film at the cinema. It past me by and I went to see The Dark Knight instead. But what a mistake I made! Its an awesome film! Perfectly cast is Robert Downey Jnr, who gets captured in the Middle East and forced at gunpoint to recreate one of his own companys defence missles. However, with the help of a fellow captive, he creates a metal armoured-suit and blasts his way out of his prision. Back in America, under the watchful eye of his boss and PA, he decides to re-create his design for defense purposes. But is his boss all who he seems to be? A fun packed frolic with incredible special effects and a great script. The blu ray quality is the best ive seen and gives you lots of extras also. A very good movie in a very good package. Enjoy!
Detailed and involving ... November 21, 2008 P. White (Cambridge, United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I greatly enjoyed this film and it was a delight to watch an escapist SF/Superhero story that was presented to adults rather than 12 year olds. The detail in the sets and SFX combined with the plausible(ish) story and excellent acting makes for a satisfying experience. The blu-ray is very good and includes a full disc worth of extras, all in HD, that are actually worth watching. It's refreshing to see concept art presented in 1080 for example because it's possible to appreciate the artwork rather than just the concept (if you see what I mean). So, good story, good production, good acting, good transfer, good extras.
Great entertainment November 7, 2008 chuckles (Netherlands) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As a fan of superhero movies, I have been a happy man recently. The quality of these movies has increased massively over the past few years. The Dark Knight, Spiderman and Hulk movies are great improvements on previous efforts.... can Iron Man keep up... OH YES! Watched this last night on my brand new 1080p TV and was blown away with the picture quality... amazing. Then you have the film itself. Sets up the character brilliantly, I really like Stark the playboy, and you are really convinced with his epiphany. With good performances from all the actors, great special effects and CGI that is not obvious, this made for a very entertaining 2 hours. Even sets you up for an exciting sequel..... a must buy for super hero movie fans, especially on Blu Ray
The perfect blockbuster... November 3, 2008 Alex C. Anderson (glasgow sco) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
and the perfect comic book movie. Iron man had a hard job this summer a little known Marvel character in his first movie, released in a summer of great comic book movies (The Dark Knight, The incredible Hulk and Hellboy 2 The Golden Army}for anyone who knows the character of Tony Stark{Iron man)I dont need to explain how great the casting of Robert Downey jnr was, he simply is tony stark, jnr has a great dryness to his humour and sarcasm that really works with this character. The rest of the cast include Jeff Bridges, Terrence Howard and gwyneth Paltrow. The plot of the movie is fairly straightforward Tony Stark ceo of weapons manufacturer Stark Industries, travels to a warzone to sell his latest creation while there he gets abducted by hostiles and during the attack is severly injured, the hostiles try to force stark to build his latest weapon for there use, Stark instead designs a suit strong enough to break him out of his prison. fairly straightforward on paper however this summer you would be hard pressed to find 2 hours of fun like this, you genuinly can sense the directors passion for this character and how much work has gone into translating this faithfully from comic book to silver screen, as is made very evident through the superb special features. if you like comic book movies or intelligent blockbusters you must have this cant recommend this enough
