Amazon.co.uk Review The Dark Knight arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what makes the movie great--in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing, and a compelling vision--is that it bypasses the normal fantasy element of the superhero genre and makes it all terrifyingly real. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City's new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralysed the city. He enters an uneasy alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon--and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player enters the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers the crime bosses a solution--kill the Batman. Further complicating matters is that Dent is now dating Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, after Katie Holmes turned down the chance to reprise her role), the longtime love of Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne. In his last completed role before his tragic death, Ledger is fantastic as the Joker, a volcanic, truly frightening force of evil. And he sets the tone of the movie: the world is a dark, dangerous place where there are no easy choices. Eckhart and Oldman also shine, but as good as Bale is, his character turns out rather bland in comparison (not uncommon for heroes facing more colorful villains). Director/co-writer Christopher Nolan (Memento) follows his critically acclaimed Batman Begins with an even better sequel that sets itself apart from notable superhero movies like Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man because of its sheer emotional impact and striking sense of realism--there are no suspension-of-disbelief superpowers here. At 152 minutes, it's a shade too long, and it's much too intense for kids. But for most movie fans--and not just superhero fans--The Dark Knight is a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi

Hurry up releasing this! December 3, 2008 SeanLock 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is without doubt one of the most detailed and intriguing films of recent years, like many film franchises they get tired and boring! However with Batman Begins and the Dark Knight they have been reinvented and far out do any of the Tim Burton films though i really like those offerings also. Batman Forever and Batman and Robin are terrible. Christian Bale is an excellent Batman and is suitably supported by the rest of the cast including Heath Ledger whilst excellent is under used and the pacing of the film is off here and there but with so much dross being made it is very difficult to criticise a film which is as magical and engaging as this. Not going to go into real details into the storyline as it has all been done before but just remember to give this film a chance and brace yourself for a late night as it is a long film with a number of storylines which all blend into one another! This movie left me feeling exhilarated by the end and i am desperate to see what happens next in the Batman legacy! 9/10
Over rated, Over hyped and BOREING December 3, 2008 A. Kertesz (In Front of my PC) 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
After all the hype about this movie. I went expecting to see "the best move ever" and what I got was a avarage movie at best. Ledger was not that good. Jack was a much better joker. Eckheart was much better in this. Towards the end i found my self being very bored. However the last scene between batman and two face was very good indeed, its a shame the rest of the movie was'nt as good. I'm sure all the tdk fanboys will not agree and vote this is not helpfull but you need to ignore them as anyone who thinks this is the "best move ever" or even the best move this year is clearly delusional
Easily the best film of 2008 November 29, 2008 Sophie (Dorset, UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have never seen a 'Batman' film in my life but I watched this one because a friend said it was good. Oh, I'm soooo glad I went to see it. It was without doubt my favourite film of 2008. Heath Ledger gave an awesome performance as The Joker, it's a shame he died so young. This is the best film he has starred in (either that or 'The Patriot'). Give this a watch, you won't be disappointed!
Massive disappointment. November 26, 2008 J. Ashby 2 out of 13 found this review helpful
Now, Don't get me wrong here, I'm a BIG Batman fan and fan of comic books in general. I enjoyed Batman Begins but prefer the two Burton Batman flicks (Keaton is easily the best Bruce Wayne/Batman of anyone to play the part). The Dark Knight, while being a technically well made film, it is for me just too far removed from the Batman I have been reading for decades to even be called a Batman film, the Joker especially. This is not the Joker of the comics, this Joker has very little in common with that character. This is just some crazy guy in makeup, remove the makeup and you just have a crazy guy, could be anyone. Bales 'gruff' Batman voice also get very annoying after a while, he even uses it in the company of characters who know who he is. If it's to help disguise is identity, why put the voice on when with characters who know his secret?? What's the point of that? If I wanted to watch a 'serious' detective movie I'd have watched HEAT again, I wanted to watch a Batman movie, I'm still waiting. If you want to watch a good, fun comic book movie, buy Iron Man.
Yawwwwwwn. November 25, 2008 G. D. G. Ackland (london) 7 out of 27 found this review helpful
Relative to Tim Burton's innovations which redefined the Bat, particularly in Batman Returns, this is sorely lacking in vision, meaning, coherence and beauty. Batman Begins showed quite a bit of promise for this re-reimagining but it's all squandered now. Too long, poor plot, not much left but hype.
