Amazon.co.uk Review The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show Cybill, and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone, Mamma Mia! deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer

Blokes view December 5, 2008 pp Law (UK) Having been made to watch this by my girlfriend I thought I would right a review from a man's perspective. It was not my cup of tea but the movie is harmless enough and it is always good to see brosnan in a non bond role. The songs are ok but some of the good ABBA songs have been butchered and the ending is typically sickley. If you want to waste a good hour and a half and keep the missus happy watch the film.
Reality December 5, 2008 S. Anderson I heard all the hype, and read some reviews, so thought this really must be worth watching. I ordered the DVD and watched it last night. This must rank as one of the worst films I have ever seen. There's really nothing to it. The story is just about as thin as you can get. I assumed that even if the story was not there, I'd enjoy listening to all those ABBA songs, but they are not there either really. The songs are not even done well. If it had included original ABBA music you could just enjoy that, but you cannot. I cannot see any redeeming feature to this film except that it is filmed in a beautiful place, but we know that Greece is beautiful anyway. Buy ABBA's greatest hits and play that instead.
A modern musical masterpiece December 5, 2008 P. DATTA (Stockton on Tees, Teesside) Mamma Mia is a modern musical showpiece to really enjoy and watch timelessly. The storyline, casting, chronography and settings deserves the fullest praise for delivering a musical masterpiece. I throughly enjoyed watching it last night. It categorised as a feel good movie. Mamma Mia is a kind of movie that really brightens your day. I particularly like the way and manner various ABBA songs are used to convey feelings and emotions in particular points during the movie. ABBA are a legendary Swedish group who's legacy will never be forgotten. The movie is a musical display to promote their globally recognised music. A modern musical masterpiece to really enjoy and cherish.
Mamma Mia - Written By a Punk? December 4, 2008 Mr. C. Hovell (London) Malcolm McClaren says that Catherine Johnson - wot wrote this show - was a punk. At first I thought ' no way', but look how she's polarised the public. It's either 5 stars or 1 star in the amazon reviews. Look how the poor 1 star reviewers are vilified by the majority 5 starers. Scorned and despised for being different - just like punk! Well, I watched this as far as the bit where some biddies are singing Chiquitita to Meryl, who has locked herself in the toilet (I think) then I couldn't take anymore so I went off to pogo round my bedroom for a bit to get it out of my head. A lot of people like this film (a lot), but then a lot of people liked Max Bygraves and Genesis too. My theory is that any film that is set on a Greek Island goes down well with the British punter (apart from 'The Magus' which was even worse than this). I think it's the holiday setting - the blue sky, the sun, the white houses. So long as the film has these ingredients in the background and lots of overexcited Brits getting all emotional it's going to be a hit. Maybe that's why the Magus didn't work - Michael Caine was just too cool. A remake with the songs of Brotherhood of Man - that would work.
