Amazon.co.uk Review
After the visual bombast of many contemporary CGI and motion-capture features, the drawn characters in The Princess and the Frog, Walt Disney Studio's eagerly awaited return to traditional animation, feel doubly welcome. Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin), The Princess and the Frog moves the classic fairy tale to a snazzy version of 1920s New Orleans. Tiana (voice by Anika Noni Rose), the first African-American Disney heroine, is not a princess, but a young woman who hopes to fulfill her father's dream of opening a restaurant to serve food that will bring together people from all walks of life. Tiana may wish upon a star, but she believes that hard work is the way to fulfill your aspirations. Her dedication clashes with the cheerful idleness of the visiting prince Naveen (Bruno Campos). A voodoo spell cast by Dr. Facilier (Keith David) in a showstopping number by composer Randy Newman initiates the events that will bring the mismatched hero and heroine together. However, the animation of three supporting characters--Louis (Michael-Leon Wooley), a jazz-playing alligator; Ray (Jim Cummings), a Cajun firefly; and 197-year-old voodoo priestess Mama Odie (Jenifer Lewis)--is so outstanding, it nearly steals the film. Alternately funny, touching, and dramatic, The Princess and the Frog is an all-too-rare example of a movie a family can enjoy together, with the most and least sophisticated members appreciating different elements. The film is also a welcome sign that the beleaguered Disney Feature Animation Studio has turned away from such disasters as Home on the Range, Chicken Little, and Meet the Robinsons and is once again moving in the right direction. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous eye candy and a fast vivacious plot   August 17, 2010

Disney's fun reworking of the Princess and the Frog is packed full of humour and gorgeous imagery, and shows that you don't necessarily need CGI to make animation great fun. I enjoyed watching this as much as 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' and 'The Incredibles'. Our heroine is feisty in the best way - a strong minded girl who's determined to realise her dreams and doesn't mind a lot of hard work to get there. Her best friend is a kindhearted but dizzy rich girl determined to marry a visiting Prince. Needless to say fate gets in the way, and with the help of some local voodoo, the idle Prince finds he's got flippers and is badly in need of help. The film is set is New Orleans and the surrounding bayou, a place full of crocodiles, vines and magic, and there are great tunes throughout that really complement the fun, peppy action and the likeable comedy characters. The use of voodoo is a nice touch and it's just scary enough to ensure tension, but unlikely to genuinely scare all but the tiniest kids. The challenges are nicely stacked in our heroes' way, and the journey to escaping their situation involves some truly memorable characters, fun and drama. There are acts of selfless kindness in the film that many lesser movies wouldn't bother with, and it has a good heart. This chimes with its nicely moral core, and the frequently hinted message that maybe the idle Prince wouldn't be in such trouble if he got up and worked for what he wanted once in a while like our heroine does. Despite this, the film never loses sight of its main role - which is fun. It's endlessly entertaining, and adults will find a lot to chuckle about throughout its entire length. A sassy heroine, a suave clutz of a frog, and gorgeous animation with lots of excitement. This is definitely worth getting on blu-ray.
