5 out of 5 stars Best Detector on the Market !   September 4, 2006

Quite simply, this is the best detector on the market. Forget Snoopers, Road Angels which are not only expensive to buy, have expensive subscriptions, and rely on unreliable laser detection (which may be illegal if a new law comes into force) and do little more than tell you, you've been caught as laser does not have any 'laser scatter' and once they beep to tell you you've been 'lasered' the police have already by then clocked you !

The Talex not only warns you of all fixed cameras, including red light cameras, specs digital cameras, but also unlike most others has all the possible mobile camera sites on it's database as well. It also has accident black spots, (sharp bends/hills) as well as schools in its database.

The unit aquires satelite lock generally in about 40 seconds, then reminds you to fasten your seatbelt. When approaching a camera a female voice warns you 500 yards prior to it, announces the correct speed as well as the display showing the speed also, and if you are driving over that speed she warns you to reduce your speed ... and that's it. The Talex displays your speed as you are driving, as well as compass, trip distance, average speed and maximum speed covered.

Easy to update, and the support from Talex has been great ( i had problems with my pc at first and they could not have been more helpful).

Buy it. you won't be disappointed !

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, but has a few problems   July 17, 2006

Having purchased my Talex, I was very impressed, especially as it costs very little compared to the new Road Angel. It did everything I wanted, and it educated me about my local 'Possible Mobile Sites'.

I have a Athermic Heat Reflective windscreen and the Talex proved to be inconsistent, giving erratic readings, so I bought a screen mounting kit and positioned it in the non-reflective area above my rear view mirror - it now works a treat....! the signal is now perfect, tracking 8-9 satellites and giving an excellent signal.

However after living with the Talex for a few weeks, I have discovered that it does not give the correct compass reading, and it does not give the correct Altitude. In fact my altitude reading reads 60 metres at sea level (at the beach), it also reads 40 degrees out on the compass (i have tested both these issues against my portable altimeter, Ordinance Survey Map, and compass). I am still waiting for Talex Tech Support to email me back.......!!!!!

my main gripe is the practicality of the device. At 30Mph, the Talex is excellent(nice and clear warnings), and at 50Mph it is great; however, at 70Mph it is difficult to hear the Talex unit warning you about the mobile speed camera site.... It is so bad, I have to drive on the motorway with my Radio off - it is the only way I can just about hear the Talex unit warning me. If you switch the radio on (with a low volume), you cannot hear the Talex! In fact, you can forget having your music on, the Talex will not be loud enough, even with the Talex volume turned up to 'Max'.

For the price.... It's a very good purchase, but be warned, you do get what you pay for.

Yet the camera database is excellent - 99% accurate.

Instruction manual..... errr! umm! not the best (but it's so simple to use, you won't need the manual)

I, like others read the reviews about this detector. It seemed a bargain. I rushed to order one. I got it and despite one or two glitches it updated via the net without a problem. It worked well apart from one hugely and misleading trait. Whenever I approached a speed camera (Gatso) it signalled its "all clear" chime before I had actually passed the camera and chevrons. Always before the Chevrons and sometimes before the camera. This was very disconcerting. Despite emailing TALEX tech support 4 times they did not respond. Even after I told them I would return the device to Amazon and post this (honest) review. A glitch with mine or an overall problem? You decide. Talex couldnt be bothered to tell me.

I researched all the comparable products before buying. The Auto Express tests done in 2005 & again in 2006 were particularly helpful. Talex was a clear winner there on a price/ performance basis. At the Amazon price it is a bargain as well.
The manual does tell you how to unset any "user" positions and their website also tells you when the database was last updated. As long as you remember when you last ran the utility, then you automatically know when you have the most recent version loaded on your Talex. When doing an update, the software checks that you are a legitimate user, before taking you through a short series of logical steps.
In use, Talex performs well, detecting cameras etc sufficiently far ahead before delivering clear warning announcements (with increasing frequency if you fail to observe the warning).
I find that overall the Talex enhances my safety awareness and for me this makes it an absolute WINNER - and it is legal!

I was a bit apprehensive in buying a speed detector, after hearing so many bad reports about other makes giving false alarms etc.

But after reading about them in a motor magazine and this particular model (Talex) was giving 5 stars, so I decided to go for it. Lucky I was at the Peterborough Truck fest and the company who sells these devices had a good offer on. They explained to me how to set the device up and how to use the website to up date the software.

The area I live in is bad for mobile speed camera's etc and my job involves a lot of travelling. Once I open the box, and read the instructions and rigged the device to the top of the dash board. The device went into its own diagnostic mode, which only took 5-10 minutes, and then the correct time was displayed.
I went about my daily business and the device detected, fixed speed cameras and mobile camera's with no problem. I was amazed where the mobile speed cameras where hiding. Well worth the price and not a speeding fine and points.

It gave clear warnings, well before the speed cameras came up and even informed of the correct speed along that particular road. It told me to take a break every hour and also on the hour announced the time.
The software and web site to update the information to the device was very easy; the only problem is I can see for other users are downloading the updates and the speed of the internet.

If you are thinking of buying a speed camera detector and are unsure, I would buy a Talex.
