No Updating Problems October 11, 2008 westwit (West Sussex, UK) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
My TomTom ONE v4 (Traffic Europe 22) worked straight out of the box - very intuitive, (anyway, it's easy to pop into a high street store and ask for a demo first). Once home it was simple to connect the tomtom to my PC, although it didn't immediately connect to TomTom Home - I had to go into My Computer and find the "install.exe" file on the device and start it off by clicking that. Once connected to TomTom Home an updated European map set was immediately offered, which I downloaded. Note: this was an 850MB file and took some 3 hours on my PC with a 1Mbit broadband; BE SURE NOT TO DISCONNECT YOUR TOMTOM DURING THIS DOWNLOAD, and if you have a dodgy internet connection wait until it's stable. I had no problems at all, and then proceeded to install the new map set - this took over 40 minutes, and the same caveats as above apply. Then I backed it all up onto the PC (another 40 minutes) and, with a re-start of TomTom as instructed, all was well. So don't be put off by any scare stories - there must have been a bad bit of software month or two ago. The TomTom is clear and pretty accurate, only lagging by a few yards as you get to junctions (i.e. it says 'turn in 100 yards' when you may have only about 50 to go), but you get plenty of notice. The safety camera warnings were also accurate and give enough notice if you happen to be going a tad too fast! And it's very quick at getting a GPS fix, finding a route and giving an alternate route if you overshoot or deliberately choose to ignore the suggested one. I particularly like the ability to plan and then preview a route in advance from anywhere to anywhere else; with some satnavs you can only ask for a route starting from your current location. There are also powerful options to change the suggested route by either 'don't use' a particular section of the suggested route or by forcing the route to go via a place-name or even a particular spot on the map. All in all it looks like a very good product and I'm very pleased with it so far.
Excellent!!! October 10, 2008 J. E. Kennedy (France) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I live in France and the TomTom has every country road and we live in a very rural area. I cannot find a fault with the product it is excellent.
Satnav convert September 30, 2008 Spike (Lincs, UK) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
TomTom ONE v4 Western EuropeI was a dyed-in-the-wool map book driver but had problems with some major autoroute junctions in France - so I thought I'd try a satnav. TomTom ticked all the boxes and had good reviews so purchased TT ONE v4 Europe. First step back it up on computer using auto-loading software. Beware getting 'update' - this will take a long while so be prepared. Follow instruction and should have no problem - back-up updated TomTom. Mine in car is stuck to ashtray top in centre console no signal problems (or w/screen circles!) - you only need the occasional glance to check progress or next turn as the voice directions are loud and clear and come in plenty of time. Unit is very accurate and touch screen excellent. Yes the manual is pants but rest of product compensates. as for inserting lead, be patient and put in before sticking unit to surface. Back clips off and unit will then fit in top pocket. Comes with loads of PoI which can be very handy in unknown locations.
It works! September 3, 2008 GeoffP (Dournazac, France) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
As an ex geography teacher I had always been happy to rely on my knowledge of the UK and map reading abilities. Now I live in France and things are more difficult. I had to look up where places were, plan a route and sometimes have to write it down. Isn't that what a GPS system does for you? So I went for TomTom Europe v4. Apart from taking over an hour to locate satellites when switched on for the first time (we were having a thunderstorm at the time - would that make a difference?) it has done everything it is supposed to without any problems at all. Highly recommended.
4th edition... spot on! August 31, 2008 Mr. K. Sandiford (UK) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Received this product not far after launch date and it replaced my old (and slightly bulkier) '3rd edition'. Build quality is of a very high standard, (although the usb is set a bit deeply into the unit but don't let that put you off) and the new sucker screen attachment thing is nothing short of genius! Generally, the software appears to be the same but it locked onto sat signal a helluva lot faster than previous editions and is so small and light you REALLY could fit it into a shirt pocket this time! Just one issue, why is it called a '22', anyway replace those v3's people!
