5 out of 5 stars My favorite mouse by far.   January 29, 2008
M. L. Gibson (UK)
Having read the previous reviews which show that people either love or hate this mouse, I can safely say that I fit into the former. The first one I purchased was to be used for gaming, but since then I have bought a further three for work after being so impressed with the comfort and ease of handling.
Software issues? Never had a problem as I always upgrade the software after installing originally from the enclosed cdrom. If I were to have any critism, it would only that it is really designed for a right handed person only, otherwise I can't fault it.

2 out of 5 stars Great mouse, great performance! When it works...   December 3, 2007

I'm sad to have to agree with the people who had bad experiences with this mouse. I think the problem is not with Microsoft, but with Razer technology. This mouse is perfect for gaming. Gives you very precise aiming, smooth movements and many options for configuring the hardware. It feels very good in your hand and even the clicking action is great.
BUT...it just does not work well all the time. Everything seems to work fine for some weeks. Then it starts locking up, it freezes in mid of a fraggle. It is USB connected, so it starts losing the USB connection and you keep hearing Windows giving you audio warnings about USB plug-in, plug-out, while the mouse is flashing all over. This is the second Razer mouse I had and probably the last. With first one, I started having right button problems until it became unusable. This one, Habu, simply started disconeccting itself and I had my system frozen untill it reconnected itself again. This happening every other minute became completely unbearable. Like I said, I think it has to do with the razor tech not with Microsoft. I now use an Intellimouse 3.0 and everything feels different. But I miss Habu. Intellimouse does not have the same slick feel and precision. Maybe Razer just packed too much complicated options with it. Maybe the DPI, sensitivity, on the fly changes and so on are not very well mated with the hardware and it just "burns" the thing after use. Also, you get the feeling maybe the hardware just does not stand the work load. A mouse for gaming should stand up to more hours of play. Mind you, I am not a violent player that trashes the mouse around lol... :) Please Microsoft and Razer, improve this mouse. I want my Habu back...

5 out of 5 stars Top of the range   September 19, 2007

I bought this mouse without really checking out too many reviews, I was sick of my bluetooth wireless one taking far too many seconds to warm up - it would sometimes go to sleep while I was playing a game even with new batteries in it! So I went straight for an always-on wired gaming mouse.

I am over the moon with this mouse, the software is great and easy to install, vista compatible, I have found no down side. Although I thought on the fly DPI switching was the most useless thing in the world, I now use it all the time because it's right there at the tip of my finger, and for those of you that don't know the amount of DPI changes the speed and to be honest most of the time i use this mouse on 800dpi! But it's not wasted, because it also has 1000mhz polling which means it checks if it has moved about 10 times more often than a normal mouse.

I have -always- had microsoft mice and this time microsoft have created the fantasticly simple shape, and stuck Razer buttons and a 2000dpi laser in it - their recipy is unfaulted.

Definitely recommend this mouse to anyone - gaming user or word processor

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from the lure of Razor!   August 30, 2007

I'm sorry guys, I really really really wanted to like this mouse. Looks great, feels great on the hand, and moves well... if only a mouse could be judged on that alone.
1. First problem is that the driver is notoriously finnicky to install. Ok, installation is fine, but making the driver read the mouse can be tricky. Don't get confused between Windows reading the mouse and the actual driver (to get full 2000dpi). Even if you get it working correctly, you have to keep it plugged into the same USB socket, or else you'll have to uninstall/re-install the driver and firmware for it.
2. The "customisable" side panels is loosely fit, meaning as you're playing or working and you rest your thumb on the side, you can feel the panel push in ever so slightly. By hey, at this price, there are A LOT of well made mice.
3. Finally and most importantly, the mouse skips every so often, so that game play is impossible. By skipping, I mean that the mouse doesn't move on screen for about 4-5 seconds. And with many app's, the unplugging re-plugging of a mouse causes the screen to freeze.

If this mouse sold for 8, I'd say it was ok as a novelty. But for a serious gaming/multi-function-button mouse, forget. Go with the Intellimouse 3/4 or Logitech's G range. Much better value and quality. Steer clear of Razors!!!, it's a lottery whether or not you get a well built piece of kit (and that's not mentioning the notorious firmware).

3 out of 5 stars Great mouse, terrible software   April 26, 2007

I'm glad to see that the previous reviewer has had nothing but positive experiences with the Microsoft Habu. However, many (including myself) have different stories to tell.

Firstly, I have to say that the feel, design, and performance of the mouse (when it works as it is supposed to) is fantastic. I would not hesitate to give 5 stars on the basis of the good times.

However, I and many others have suffered from problems with the software. Yes, the initial setup can be a pain, but there are plenty of good guides on the internet to advise you on how to set this mouse up from scratch. To me, this is not the issue. The issue is that once set up, this mouse can be very temperamental about working correctly from cold boot. From profiles not loading, to buttons being inoperable, to the O/S - personally, I have tried it on 3 different PC's, using XP Pro and Vista Home Premium, and had problems on each platform.

And therein lies another problem - the hardware is made by Microsoft, the internal lazer and software by Razer. Yet if you go to Razer's support pages, you are told that you need to go to Microsoft for support; yet Microsoft's Product Center does not list it as a supported item. Who supports this product? Who knows!

I cannot recommend this mouse. You may be lucky and get it to work fine, in which case you will have an excellent product. Or you may be unlucky, and join the rest of us with software problems and little to no support. Because ideally the Microsoft Habu is a really good mouse, I have given this 3 stars - it is only the poor software and support which prevents it getting 5.
