If you want to buy a DSLR without large expenditure then this one of only a few for under 250 and will deliver everything you need.The fixed lens keeps dust out and has such a huge zoom range that it negates the need for any other lens-you would have to spend well over 600 to buy another DSLR with that sort of zoom.I like the way the camera handles-all the control buttons and shutter are within reach of one's thumb and forefinger whilst operating the camera.The video mode works very well and allows use of the zoom during videoing although manual zoom is jerky compared to a camcorder powered zoom.I've used this camera for 18 months,usually set at 400ASA,and have used it at 1600ASA without flash in pubs etc and got perfectly acceptable results,although you'll get noisy results if that setting is used in daylight ! As it uses AA batteries you'll need a battery charger and a spare set of rechargeable batteries-although the camera does allow 6-8 shots to be taken after the battery warning comes up.Excellent value for a first time DSLR buyer.

I thought this camera was great ... I would have had no qualms until 6 months later it went dead on me and I sent it back to fuji for repair ( which cost me 10 special delivery ) they sent it back within 5 days ... I was thrilled, as I use it for my work all the time. But they sent it back still dead ... it was totally as if they received it put it on the shelf for the weekend then sent it back on the Monday still broken!! Now they say I won't get it back before Christmas which is outrageous! I have never ever had a camera with a shelf life of 6 months; I am extremely disappointed!

As an absolute convert to digital photography, I opened the box of my shiny new camera with glee. I'd chosen the s9600 for a couple of key features - I'd read the rave reviews, I wanted a camera with a manual focus as well as autofocus, it had plenty of manual overrides, a good lens spec, it ran off of AA batteries, everyone else I know with a Fuji gets cracking results, it wasn't the price of a fully-fledged SLR... perfect?
Well NO actually! The main thing that lets this camera down is noise. CCD noise, that is. Shoot in anything but brilliant sunlight and the level of CCD noise is such that the pictures come out all soft & blurry looking - even when shooting in RAW mode, it's a let-down. At first I though the camera was faulty - so it went back to Fuji, who returned it within a few days saying it was operating "within spec".
Sorry Fuji, I get FAR better results out of my old 5MP Kodak 5790

Took the plunge after much searching and couldn't be happier. As a novice in the world of 'proper' photography I was looking for something that gave me the feel and performance of an SLR without the fuss and expense of collecting lens's, and the Fuji hits the mark right on.
A few comments made about the feel and build, but it's sound (unless you've been used to handling cameras twice the price).
Couldn't be easier to use, the Auto setting takes care of most requirements and as you gain confidence and experience the other modes are pretty easy to get used to with fanstastic results.
Agree with comments battery wise, get yourself some rechargable 2500 and they last 5 times as long as ordinary. A bit disappointed it doesn't come with a memory card, but you can't have everything I suppose.
The lens is a standard 58mm so you can get filters for it no problem.
All in all this a great camera for a first timer or someone wanting a back up camera. I'm well chuffed.

I bought this camera because I wanted "all" the features of a Pro, while not having to change the lenses, but still have enough wide angle and zoom power to satisfy my needs. And for this price, this camera couldn't be any better! Well...it could actualy, in terms of frames-per-second. That's the only thing I don't like about this camera. Too slow if you are into sports or high speed shooting. That's where the Pros really show why the higher prices. Besides that, you almost won't notice that this is not a Pro camera, with all it's manual controls and settings. The dual card slot is also very usefull, so you don't waste your previous xD cards, while you can go for bigger capacity and speed CF ones. As I said before, if this camera had the 3fps or higher,like the Olympus one, it would be just a perfect match! If you are not a Pro and don't mind taking pictures at 1.2fps, you'll love this camera. The picture quality is also very good and you won't notice any bigger differences when compared to Pro cameras. As always, it's more important the person behind the camera, than the camera itself. :-) I don't regret buying this camera and I bet that like my previous S5000, it will last me for years and years, without any problems.
