Amazon.co.uk Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings.
Old timer Snake returns for what is slated as the final installment in the Metal Gear series. View larger. |
New and old characters abound in MGS4. View larger. |
PMCs have run amok and the world is at war. View larger. |
Octacamo will help Snake blend into surroundings. View larger. | Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone. MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. The concept behind the latest Metal Gear Solid project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous MGS franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy bits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the MSX2 Metal Gear series, and three entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. Add to this Portable Ops, and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in Metal Gear Solid 4." Kojima was very clear about the finality of MSG4, leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final instalment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumoured that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance. In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camouflage," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that MGS4 will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumour has it that MGS4 is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.

Best MGS ever! October 14, 2008 J. Le Mar (United Kingdom) The Good......... The way the story brings together most of the plots and characters from all three previous games. The narrative answers some of the questions from past games. My favourite part of the game was the return to shadow moses. This was a completely genius idea. All MGS fans remember charging through shadow moses in 1998 and despite the advances in MGS settings, nowhere feels like the home of MGS than shadow moses. It was brilliant going back and seeing how it had changed and how in many ways the same. It really felt like you were going back to somewhere you hadn't been for 10 years. The character realism and relationships were at another level. Again 10 years since it all began it was great seeing how the characters had developed. The characters are what makes MGS. Graphics and HD - This game really took full advantage of HD gaming. The detail in the setting and characters faces was outstanding. I have yet to see a PS3 game use the HD this well. Drebin was a good addition. The flexibility to buy and sell weapons was probably overdue and enables different players to use different tactics playing the game. He brought something different to the series, as did Little Gray the monkey of course. New enemys - The idea of using new versions of MGS1 enemies in the Beauty in the Beast unit was great. I also liked the challenge of the addition of Gekkos and mini Gekkos (the black spheres with a hand). However mini Gekkos are an annoyance to deal with, but its good to be kept challenged. Meryl - great to see her back in the series. The microwave tunnel, classic MGS4. The music montage as you stagger through and see how everyone elses battles are falling apart. Its very emotional, I was pressing Triangle as quickly as I could, but couldnt get through the whole tunnel. It hot in there! The not so good..... With MGS you know that you are going to spend a lot of time watching long and sometimes complicated cut scenes. There is a lot, although the ratio of game play to cut scenes is probably better than it was for MGS2. However the cut scenes are normally interesting and a major part of the game. **Spoiler alert** The probable demise of Solid Snake and wrapping up of the plot. Its great seeing how the plot resolves and Snake surviving the events. However what about the next game in a couple of years? This cant be the end for solid snake can it? My hope is that someone develops something to reverse Snakes rapid ageing and we get MGS5. Limited codec - the reliance on the codec has been trimmed down for MGS4. Sometimes when i needed advice defeating a boss i struggled to get it out of codec chats. Meryl marrying Johnny? Not sure about that! I always thought it was love between Snake and Meryl! Conclusion This game is without doubt the best MGS game ever released, and not just because it benefited from the HD generation of gaming. The plot and characters were brilliant. I believe it is the best game to be released on PS3 so far. Overall : 5 Stars Gameplay: 5 Stars Graphics: 5 Stars Plot: 5 Stars Online Capabilities: 3 Stars Realism: 5 Stars
Sneaky Sneaky October 6, 2008 Owen (Scotland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really like the story mode on this although i just loose intrest when i cant get passed a bit after a while, but this is a really clever game i like how you can ethier play it sneaky or go in all guns blazin. Im not the best at sneakin. I love the octo camo i want some of that. How good an idea was it to put a virtual ipod on this to calm snakes nerves now thats some thought been put into this game every little detail is covered. The online games are good there are various game modes its diffrent from your normal online game whch is a good thing. they have managed to incorporate the sneaking into this. If you like a game where you can sit down for hours and play this is for you. This is the first metal gear solid game i have played and liked it yo dont need to have played the others although it might add to the storyline but as you play through you begin to realise what happened in the previous ones.
Great Online and Offline October 5, 2008 Amanda Steiert (London, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great game and one of the best games I have seen so far. The offline play(The full game) is a great sequel to all of the other games as it gives you all of the answers for the game that you have been waiting for and will surprise you with loads of twists and turns that you would never of expected. Also, they have online play which will probably revolutionise all other games. It allows you to create one character and then build up loads of skills and your own characters personal level. There are thousands of players online and is one of the biggest online games so far. Also, it is only a starter pack. Your can buy expansions from the Konami website but it will cost about 5 or 10. I would recommend this to anyone, even if they have never played any of the Metal Gear Solid series.
Ignore the nay-sayers October 3, 2008 Mr. B. A. Ball 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
First of all, to everyone saying this is more a movie than a game/the most boring movie they've ever watched etc. Do be quiet. You can skip the cut scenes so dry your little eyes, however you risk missing out huge segments of the story line but if it bores you so much then what have you got to lose? There are no words to describe just how engaging and breathtaking this game is. I mean wow, it's been a long time since a game has impressed me so. I had it for a couple of months but I was so busy working all the time I barely had a chance to play it. Then a friend of mine got it and completed it within about 3-4 days. Ok, I thought, I need to finish that game, so I played it to act 3, then from act 3 to finish, not because I wanted to keep up with my friend, but because I literally couldn't put the controller down. It's THAT good. Graphics 10/10 - Stunning attention to detail, if you equip the barrel on shadow moses island, snow builds up on it from the direction it's falling. You don't even need to use the barrel! Nice touch. Sound 9/10 - Immersive, moody. It really pulls you into the game, you ARE Solid Snake for a few hours. Gameplay 9/10 - It's fun to play, easy to get to grips with. I will admit it is a little bit TOO easy at times but that can be fixed by playing it on Big Boss Extreme mode. Otherwise, superb. If you own a PS3 you owe it to yourself to get this game. I need to end this review now because when I start a MGS4 rant I can't stop and I would not want to ruin the game for those who haven't played it yet.
