4 out of 5 stars BUY IT!   February 14, 2008

Never really got into these battle card games, but this is different. No big caluations, no need for a calulator and no need to strain your memory memorising your monsters HP.

Whilst one review didnt like the cotton mat, it is quite good quality and better than using another mterial such as paper (as some of these card games do). The graphics are very impressive and the animations are smooth. You can turn the animations of if you so wish.

You dont even need a controller for this game (expect for the menus) and the main game can be played with just cards - which is really cool and convient. The 'action cards' need to be held up to the eye which is a knack as you must get it the right distance from the eye and whithout obsuring the face of the card.

I personally dont mind the metal soundtrack it seems to suit the game (but when defeat is near - I hate it!). When the game starts to get a bit crowded (with lots of cards on the mat) there is often a problem with one card not being read properly - you fix that and in doing so, you ruin another card etc. Shadows are the main cause of this (so buy/get a desktop lamp or something!).

The game allows you focus on the great stratgry element - but the tutrials are more cofusing than they are helpful. Play with a friend the first few times and learn from each others mistakes - before challanging a computer or going online. The cards themselves are good quality and with currently over 110 crds to collect (with more on there way) the game always give you soemthing new.

All in all, a great game - a few reconigition problems can easily disrupt your game and put you right off it!

4 out of 5 stars Different, fun and addictive   January 9, 2008

This game is fairly easy to pick up (guidance videos are available with the game), but also requires a lot of thought and strategy to play. It can be quite challenging, and I love the ruleset and how the game works. The use of the camera works very well. It doesn't seem to make any mistakes when picking up the cards, which then come to life beautifully on the screen. When you first start playing the novelty of how it works is very exciting. The use of real cards also has another great implication in that they can be collected. You can buy new 30 card decks for around 7 and booster packs consisting of 8 cards for around 2.50, which i find is quite resonable. The decks also come with a small booklet containing storis and info about the game, and some cards are rarer than other. (I look forward to being able to trade with my mates for cards i don't have.)

This game allows you to either play against the computer, computer vs computer, player vs player in the same room, or online. Online is very easy to use, allowing you to create both public and private games. If set up the mic on top of the camera also allows you to speak to your opponent. The computer is great for practice, but this game is best when being able to play against a human opponent. When i bought this game I was lucky in that most of my friends were also interested in playing it too, allowing me to play them online (which is something i did take into consideration before buying.) Another thing to take into consideration before getting this game is the space required to set it up. This game uses a mat to lay your cards out on. It's best if you hav a good flat surface in a well lit room. I have a desk lamp placed directly over the top of mine, as i've noticed the camera does start struggling to read things when my lights are low.

One thing i would have liked in this game would have been a single player campaign type mode.

The Playstation eye which comes with this game has also received a lot of use outside of EOJ, as other games also work with it. If you already have a camera, i have seen this game available separately for around 40 in the shops.

Overall I'm very impressed with the game. It's unique and fun. If you like card games, fantasy, magic, or just something a bit different, chances are you'll like it too...

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, original, amazing fun.   January 8, 2008

This is what owning a PS3 is all about!!

I received this game for Christmas day (with Biolith Scourge theme deck and 4 additional booster packs) and since then I've hardly stopped playing it, and if I'm not playing it I'm trying to improve my decks.

Since getting it I've bought a Fire Crusader theme deck and another 5 booster packs which I should take delivery of any day now :)

Once you get over the initial confusion this game really comes into its own. It's furiously addictive and is a genuinely original and fresh take on the trading card genre. The way the camera reads your cards and generates a 3D creature on screen almost immediately is truly amazing and is a sight to behold. The possibilities of this game are incredible, there's just so much strategy involved and half the fun of this game is getting to know your cards and building your very own deck, then taking it online to battle against the world for never the same game twice.

Graphically the game is fantastic, with loads of cool lighting and magic effects when you place a card on the board and a creature or spell is generated in front of your very eyes.

I recommend this game to anyone that's a fan of trading card games, or anyone that is getting tired of the constant stream or shooters on the market at present. It really is a breath of fresh air and a real treat to find a game that breaks the mould and dares to be different, and it succeeds brilliantly. It's incredibly deep and involving and requires a great deal of time to master, but once you do it is very rewarding.

Get this game. You will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent blast on Christmas Day and beyond   December 27, 2007

This is a tremendous game. It takes 3 or 4 hands to understand the game properly (Things like don't put certain card types on fire fields....d'oh .... That mistake cost me a game) and some other subtleties but once you have it sussed there seems to be depths of play that escaped us at first. It's a little like learning chess....once you have the basics you can start thinking of smarter ways of going about winning. My son got a PS3 and various games for his Christmas present but to be honest we've had virtualy nothing but this on. It's a great visual game and even my father my son's grandad got to understand it and join in. It's a great card game and taken to a whole new level with the graphics. Thoroughly recommended. I have only one word of warning or comment though... buy a couple of the pre-made sets of cards and invest in a dozen or so booster pacs for some really great fun.

4 out of 5 stars a great game   November 2, 2007

This game i imagen will be a good Christmas gift if you were into card game like yu-gi-oh and or pokemon where you mind drivels off to imangen what these battle would look like with same great 3-D technology. Thankfully you mind doesnt have to wonder off that much anymore thanks to the intellegent playstation eye, the eye itself is well built and has a programme which can be downloaded from the playstation store to get more out of it. The stand itself is a bit plasticity but when you get on with the game it doesn't become a factor as your minds are taken off of it and onto the beautiful graphics and the coolness of summoning your own cards into reality. far go the cloth mat is annoying for first time use but like me I ironed mine out (be careful not to burn it). Gameplay goes the A.I is very challenging even from my point of view where I have played card games before and prepared to be squashed many times. the tutorial is long but does explain facts about the game which is must reading material to undertsad many core aspects of the game, online is a bit harder and there is no possibility to cheat since the PS3 picks card for you to draw out so make sure you have you had sorted out into magic and monsters to pick up the pace quickly.

the game is enjoyment all round much preferred with a player vs player duel but on your own you AI companion will keep mocking you until you remember that water and fire don't mix i give this a 4/5
