Lazy January 7, 2009 Mark Standing (England) I'm fed up with a couple of things about this game. Why is it IMPOSSIBLE to save player 2's control preferences in system set up for pro evo 2009 on PS3? It NEVER saves, yet player 1's does. Konami have done a million updates, (all attempts to correct the laggy online play, which have never worked) and not once addressed this schoolboy error. And talk of laziness, the master league, is POINTLESS because of KONAMI. We all know Pro Evo never can afford the licences for the team names and players. But that hasn't mattered too much in the past, because before, with Master League, you could create 7 Division 1 clubs and your own new team, to start in the Master League division 1. Then your master league game, whether in Div 2 or 1, would consist of entirely English teams. This is now not possible, because although you can alter the names of two 'league a' teams, and make lots of 'league b' teams in the edit mode, you can only use the league a teams in your master league. Konami are SO lazy, it's the same rubbish every year - NO ONE WANTS TO TAKE PART IN A DOMESTIC LEAGUE WITH OTHER EUROPEAN TEAMS. AT LEAST GIVE US THE CHANCE TO CREATE AT LEAST SEVEN ENGLISH DIVISION 1 TEAMS SO WE CAN HAVE A MASTER LEAGUE FULL OF ENGLISH TEAMS. Please Konami, no more updates that are failed attempts to make the online games playable (they never will be, I've given up and want to at least get some satisfaction from 1-2 player). Give us decent updates. Like the ability to change the names of more than two non-english teams. People are flocking to use FIFA 09 now because of KONAMI's laziness and stupidness. I myself can forgive the lack of licenses, but cannot forgive the inability to edit team names to have enough english teams to start an english league. On another note, more camera angles, would be a nice update. I like to change the angle of the goal line, like I used to in previous versions of this once great game. Do they actually employ people to check these pro evo games? They used to be streets ahead of fifa...at the moment i feel im buying pro evo out of loyalty. OK yes I admit, I believe pro evo still plays the better football game, but only just. The movement is still too '8 directional'. run down the wing and cross upwards, and it's like the ball flies exactly on a 360 heading. it's too much like 'rails', too 'snap to grid'. Something has to change. If you're not after Master League, I still recommend this to buy over FIFA. I mean, there's nothing else. So there's nothing else to recommend apart from this an FIFA. And the playability has improved from last year. The phrase I see so often about this game is 'it's what last year's game SHOULD have been'. That says it all. Firstly that it plays at least something like you remember the Pro Evo of old playing like. And secondly, that Konami have fallen a year behind in their efforts. They were once seen as geniuses, now I just view the whole company as lazy idiots, who either don't know how far they're slipping, or, even worse, they DO know that they're lazy and are happy putting sod all effort into the game.

Biggest load of rubbish I have ever played. If you like basic arcade style "soccer" then you will like it. If you like real football and want to play with real team names and real players FIFA09 is your game not this infant piece of toss.
Lack luster in almost every way December 15, 2008 Stand alone complex I bought this with the hopes of a new PES which has recognised its previous falts....have they? Not at all. The first thing i did was created myself and went into 'become a legend' mode, which i have to admit kept me hooked for 10 seasons in which i've become very successful, but thats not the point. The AI is a mess, most of the time you'll find yourself swearing at the tv calling your team mates every name under the sun! as they: 1) hardly ever pass to you 2) always go for glory themselves 3) love to keep the ball in defense with 5mins to go on the clock when you're losing by a goal or so (without fail) Another thing which annoyed me about the become a legend mode was the fact that i could not make my player a footballing god straight away.I totally respect the fact that konami would like you to gradually become a good player as opposed to being uber talented from the get go, but to put it simply they ask too much. I mean if i want to be a 17yr old wiz kid i should be allowed that choice, no? Wouldn't it be better to let the people decide how they would like to approach this? because as you progress you will frequently find that ALOT of the 17-20yr old players in the game are better then you! with there stats in the 90's?!?!?! i mean c'mon thats ridiculous as the player is forced to start with stats which are unplayable, its not until you get to around 26/27 that your player becomes any good at all, and even then they'll only be average! what on earth is the point in that when at 26/27 your stats are coming close to the time they start to go down!!! arrrrgggggh!!! As for the other modes, i just didnt bother after playing half way through a season in master league, there really is no point, nothing has been done to improve any aspect of it what so ever, the actual stats mean VERY LITTLE. On many occasions have i been running down the wing with a player whose speed and body balance are far superior to any guy from the opposing team, only to have one of their defenders completely overtake me. Also, with the shooting its pure luck if you score, you could take the same shot 10 times and only score it once. The stats feel as though they have very little to do with the gameplay. Which was really evident in the become a legend mode, my guy has 87 shot accuracy and sometimes i still manage to miss the most simplest of tap in's. You will often find that there is no space what so ever on the pitch which is hardly realistic for a football sim, as the amount of space on the pitch should vary on the score line/team style of play, so if both teams have an attacking formation/mentality then there shud be an abundance of space, konami have just ignored these elements completely and decided to make both teams participate in a royal rumble for the ball... I've seriously never felt more stressed while playing a game. on the good side of things, the creation is okay i guess, and ummm...yeah thats about it. Which is why regretably i may be switching to FIFA upon a friends reccomendation. If you want to keep your blood pressure down, please dont get this for the sake of your health and mental stability.
Still entertaining, still flawed... December 7, 2008 Adam McGee (Norwich) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Firstly, on the debate of PES versus Fifa, this year I think whichever game you purchase, you're going to enjoy it. Fifa has certainly come on leaps and bounds and both games have their pros and cons. Concerning PES 2009, the major factor worrying gamers from 2008 was the online gaming, and sadly there are still problems with PES2009, despite the promises made by Konami that online was top priority. In my experience, the player who is the home team tends to enjoy a lag free game, whereas the player who is the away side suffers from teleporting players and lag, making games frustrating at times. I have a good connection that is always at least yellow, and often I have difficulty away from home. Defending also seems harder online, and as defending is hard enough as it is, this is not a welcome development. However, the Legends mode, where you can take your ingame player from Become A Legend (which I'll touch on later) online to play with up to three other users against a CPU team, seems to work much better and is an enjoyable addition. Gameplay itself is as expected - many people are pointing out that gameplay is sped up somewhat this time round, which it is, but I think the idea behind this is to try and push people away from holding the sprint button all the time - dictating the pace of the game is important in PES and the 2009 edition is no different. While the new Fifa as excelled itself, it's with the basic gameplay that PES still has the edge, the fluidity of passing and the excellent manual pass mode help create seemless attacks. There's not many greater feelings in gaming than stringing together an attack that culminates in a shot from outside the box flying ino the top corner - especially against a friend! Looks wise, PES2009 is a mixed bag - the menus are as awful as ever, and the player animations look robotic (though this a side effect of a limited 8-way direction system which hopefully will be worked on in 2010), but when it comes to actual kits and faces, PES edges Fifa - take a look at the awfulness that is Chelsea's kit on Fifa for evidence of this. One gets the feeling there's only so far PES can go by having the same old player animations though, a change would be nice next time out. PES 2009 features a Champions League mode which looks terrific, but PES have missed a trick by not making it more part of the game - you can play an exhibition game or the CL competition, but it doesn't feature it the Become A Legend mode, for example. Champions League in Master League, imagine that! To be honest, CL feels a little superfluous as you don't play it in any other part of the game, hopefully next year we'll have a situation where, if you choose to play a Serie A season for example, you'll play domestic and offical European games, but that may be asking too much... Become A Legend mode is an excellent addition to the PES world, while some may think it's a ripoff of the Be A Pro mode in Fifa, the concept in fact was used in earlier Winning Eleven titles under the name Fantasia. Essentially, you are a 17 year old who gets scouted for a mid-level team, and you play in your chosen role (in midfield or attack), ideally using the vertical wide camera to give you a real sense of individual playing. Criticism of this mode centres on the old PES problem of liscensing - with no real leagues in this mode, you're definately aware that you're playing in a fictional leagues and fictional cups (again, why couldn't the Champions League be in this mode?!), and also it's frustrating how often you have to move clubs to keep your wages going up - I for one would like to be loyal to my club, but so far I've played for 4 different teams and I'm only 20! However, as entertainment goes, it proves more of a draw for the single player than one off games against the CPU. Football sims are better with a friend, but this mode goes someway to creating an excellent one-player mode that will retain your interest. The better your player gets and the older he gets (to a point), the more effective he will be when playing the online legends mode too, so there's extra incentive to work your way through the mode. Edit mode is back and by-and-large is a success, though personally I feel it's a little harder to get everything looking perfect this time round - while you can import pictures and draw onto the front of kits using the edit mode, more often than not what you've drawn will look good until you actually place it on the shirt. Still, it's nice to have the option back and I certainly have enjoyed recreating my old high school team complete with shiny new branded kits! A major issue with PES that is partly solved by editing is the lack of licenses, and this year (again, on a next gen console) we also suffer from a lack of stadia - quite why we don't have Anfield or Old Trafford this time is baffling - before we had 'fake versions' called Red Cauldron and Trad Brick, but this time nothing - despite the fact both Liverpool and United are licensed in this edition. It's the little touches that add to the realism and I miss playing with Liverpool at Anfield, it just doesn't feel the same having Liverpool at a random ground when at home(especially on a Champions League night, though PES2009 does introduce the ability to add mp3 chants so you can have a bit of You'll Never Walk Alone belting out). Overall, PES2009 is a step forward from 2008 and is still a very enjoyable game, but there's not only a sense that Fifa is taking over, but also that PES is struggling in general with the next gen world. However, that's not to say this is in any way a bad game, quite the opposite in fact. As I mentioned before, there's nothing quite like piecing together a passing move on PES, and, especially against a human opponent, there's definately still the 'ooh!' factor. Online is still flawed, which for me is a major disappointment, but I'm still enjoying playing PES2009 and, especially with Become a Legend, will be enjoying it until the next release.
Become? It is a legend. December 6, 2008 J. Bantick (UK) 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
Last year I had a PS2 and the reviews for Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 said it was the same as PES 6. So very happy with PES 6 - and for the first time in over 10 years - I didn't buy a Pro Evolution game. It turned out to be a stroke of luck, because by the time I had bought a PS3 I was to learn that EVERYBODY on earth hates PES now (even the people still playing, in hope it'll get better)! So when the demo for Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 came out I was worried it might be broken...but it wasn't! Then I worried that the demo was a trick...but it wasn't! It was everything I remember, but better...and harder! After two weeks of exclusively changing the kits (of which there are only 18 teams without kits) with the superb editing mode, which I tried to get TOO perfect and in the end gave up...after all I did buy it to play football :D The editing is very simple and yet you can get really good results. It doesn't take too long to do all the kits...unless you're like me ;) Now I've done my kits, I go straight into the new mode, Become A Legend, where you start as a promising 17 year old striker/midfielder and hopefully end up lifting the World Cup. It is by some way the best mode any football game has to offer, and I include the Masters League in that. It has the stats of Football Manager, goals scored, games played, Man of the Match, even minutes played and average match rating. It has the progression of the Masters League, build up your stats to become a better player. You can also give special attention to the stats you need to build up, whether it be speed, dribbling or power. You start for a made up team and told that scouts are watching you. After this first game you will receive offers from a couple of teams, I chose Sunderland. Now you have to fight in training to just get on the bench and I do mean FIGHT. I took me 11 games just to get on the bench! If you play well you get in the first team and bigger clubs will try to sign you. At the bigger club you will contest the bigger trophies, play in Europe and then that all important England call up (or whatever nation you chose at the beginning). In a neat trick, you can put yourself into the game - either with a picture or direct from a camera - with a pretty good result (my nose isn't as big in PES, nice one :D) In-game you have a choice of cameras, the best being vertical wide (ball), although some will find it hard to adjust to at first, because the camera moves about alot and your player will just be a cursor in the distance, but for the most part it really gives you the feeling of being part of the team. At the very beginning, it will very often feel like a goal is impossible, due to the fact that your player is rubbish, but as your player builds up his stats it does get easier. If only when you get to 30, Become A Legend merges with the Masters League, so you can be a player manager :) Maybe next time ;) The Masters League hasn't changed much, apart from the excellent scouting system. And the only disappointment is that the goals scored, matches played stats (that could be view after every match) have been removed. But it really doesn't matter, considering I'll be playing Become A Legend. The sound in this game is hit and miss. The crowd effects are superb (which you can add to if you like) reacting to moments in the game (and as a side note, the crowd actually stand when a player is through on goal). The commentary - is as usual - below par, and it wouldn't be so bad if the actual quality of the recording was any good, at times it sounds like it's been phone in. And Mark Lawrenson sets the benchmark for worst commentary ever, you can tell he's just reading - without ANY emotion - from a script. For the hardcore who play on Top Player, the game has been slowed down to a realistic pace, meaning you really have to think about how you are going to break that defence. This is where stats mean what they say. No more can you easily win promotion with a team that consists mostly of the default players in the Masters League. Shooting seems easier...until you realise that you're 3-1 down. Online is just about playable, but I wouldn't recommend it. The Konami servers simply aren't good enough. But having said that what's good about this game, far outweighs the bad. If you want a game just to play online I'd go for FIFA, but if you don't there is only one game you need.
