Manufacturer's Description The third game in the Fallout series, Fallout 3 is a singleplayer action role-playing game (RPG) set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. Combining the horrific insanity of the Cold War era theory of mutually assured destruction gone terribly wrong, with the kitschy naivety of American 1950s nuclear propaganda, Fallout 3 will satisfy both players familiar with the popular first two games in its series as well as those coming to the franchise for the first time. Welcome to the nation's capital. View larger. | The Brotherhood of Steel is a powerful ally. View larger. | Customize characters with your Pip-Boy. Oblivion, with a few differences January 6, 2009 R. Murray A few months ago, I played through oblivion and while the fighting bits were fun, got seriously hacked off by the limited dialog, and dated sub-games. While Fallout is different, the story line, combat and setting are all pretty different, it's still very obvious that the game engine is the same, and that for me makes it little more than a re-hash of an average, dated game. Basically, if you love Oblivion, great, get it. However, if, like me, you thought Oblivion was alright, but a bit boring, don't.
Best game ever.......period January 6, 2009 Scott Bounds (Cornwall) Having read a lot of the reviews on here I have to agree with some of the lower scoring reviewers in that the game can be very hard to get into at the beginining. You have to remember that your character has very little skill in anything including combat and its very easy to die a lot!! My suggestion to this would be to ramp the difficulty right back to very easy until your familiar with all the controls and combat situations and then notch it up level or two. Once i had done this it allowed me to get into the game and I have been addicted ever since! I have been playing this game solid for 2 months now and I still havent completed it! The game is massive and without doubt the biggest open ended map I have ever encountered you can literally spend hours just clearing and searching through 1 building and ther are over 150 locations to search for! Get this game and be patient with it and you will be rewarded with hours and hours of addictive gameplay! Best game ever.
Boring dont get it January 2, 2009 Mr. G. O. A. Adelakun (london) 0 out of 8 found this review helpful
I got this game for xmas hoping that it will live up to the hype and quite frankly it didn't ive tried to get into it but its just the same boring thing every new mission basically get to this location without dying. And even on very easy its impossible to complete im very disspointed and i'm selling my fallout as a result
One for Oblivion fans who want to play with guns instead of swords! January 2, 2009 Snowy3 (UK) I know its already been said but it's true so I'll say it again - this game is what would happen if Oblivion and Bioshock had a love child! Take the look and free and control system from Oblivion (well it is a Bethesda game after all) and throw in the quirky 1950's backdrops and style from Bioshock along with the post apocalypse story line. If you enjoyed Oblivion (and I did very much) then I think you will love this game. It feels very 'Oblivion' with the character interaction being very similar. Fighting is also similar but seeing as in Fallout you get to play with a more modern range of weapons, the advanced shooting system (V.A.T.S) is very good. It allows you to line up your shots and aim rather than randomly blast. Other reviewers have commented on the bleak backgrounds and yes I can see where they are coming from. The backdrops are deserted buildings and abandoned vehicles in the wastelands. So not much colour then but we are talking about a world after nuclear war. Yes its not visually stunning but small things like dust motes in the sunlight and the detail on signs and posters I think makes up for that. This is a game you can pretty much pick up and go with but it took me a little time to figure out the more advanced controls. There is little tutorial which could be good or bad depending on what sort of person you are. You do get some 'setting the scene' type levels which teaches you how to move and the basics of shooting and I thought this was dealt with really well. In fact I think it was my fave part of the game. There was also a really clever bit where you take an 'exam' in order to see what sort of character you are e.g. what stats you are going to have. On the whole I think this is a great adventure type game which I have only just scratched the surface of. So to sum up: Good Points Great storyline Familiar control system Huge world to explore Bad Points Possibly the lack of tutorials The Pip boy font is hard to read on smaller tellies even when you change the colour. So if you have some xmas cash burning a hole in your pocket and you want to immerse yourself in a surreal 1950's world then try Fallout 3. p.s Don't be put off by the strange 'Pip boy' character on the back of the game box - when I first looked at this game I thought that was a bit strange!
