Kiitos Talk Now! December 8, 2006 Hel (Lincs) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an excellent piece of software for beginners. The advantage of using software such as this rather than books is that you learn how to pronounce words. This is very important in finnish as the words can be very long and a bit daunting when in written form. I am thoroughly enjoying using this to teach myself finnish and am surprising myself at how quickly I can pick up the words and remember them. If only I had had something like this when doing french at school! This is only for beginners though so for more complicated phrases etc and grammar you also need to purchase a good dictionary and grammar book.
Ok for beginners June 2, 2005 #21 (Southsea, England) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
Got this for my girlfriend to learn basic Finnish before we went to visit my home country and I suppose the CD is okay for your very basics. Points off for the two people at the corners who's lip-movement has been dubbed crudely and also some of the terminology is not correct at all. My biggest beef is when you give a correct answer and the guy says "Varmasti." It is infuriating - you can't say that in that context. As a professional translator, I think they should have reviewed some of the terminology before publishing this product. It's cheap and cheerful though, so I do not think it was money wasted.
Puhun Suomea! May 31, 2005 C. A. Dalby (Southampton, UK.) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was looking for something 'interactive' to help me learn some basic finn. This is an easy to use, colourful and interactive way to do just that! This CD-rom allows you to visit over and over again subject like numbers and body parts or colours. You can also click on the pictures (eg 5 mango) and you will then learn the quantity and the noun. It is pretty basic language and the numbers only go to 20 so this should be seen as a very first step and probably not much else, there is little progression on this CD (unless i've not found it yet!!!). It is easy to use and easy to grow out of but the bright colourful images will entertain you whilst you learn. If you are the sort of person who learns in a visual way this really is the thing for you. At the bottom corners of both sides of the screen is a man and woman who will take it in turns to say the word you are learning however they can be really off-putting as they move slightly and smile whilst your working. In short, i am a big fan and would give it 5 out of 5 but there are a few places for improvement....a very worthwhile investment and hours of fun!
Finnish is not an easy language May 17, 2001 54 out of 55 found this review helpful
I moved to finland 2 years ago and used this CD to get the basics of the language before going. Don't expect to become fluent with this, you wont, but it will give you what you need to know for basic shopping and getting around as a tourist. The games are fun and memorable and also quite adictive, I never played less than one hour once I started learning. This provides an excellent start to a very difficult language in which pronunciation is very important and cannot be learned from a book. I have also completed the second CD which is also very good.
