3 out of 5 stars Not Great   March 24, 2007

I have tried Linspire as my first experience in linux and was very disappointed. Contrary to what I have always been told about linux in general,it locked up often, forcing a reboot or even off-on. I never manged to get it to work with my Epson CX4600 - ever. CNR feature is a positive, but its not very encouraging when you download software and then have to investigate how to install it, which involves a certain knowledge on linux command line syntax.
linspire 5.0 works fine as long as you don't want to do anything aside from the basics, but after that its extremely limited - lack of drivers and other support. Even Real player10.0 for linux is a reduced-function version.
in the end I am using madriva which came free in a magazine and recognised my epson straight away!

5 out of 5 stars Linspire, puts linux on the desktop for non technical users   July 10, 2006

It has been a few years since I last looked at Linux (Mandrake 7.0), and it looks a good deal slicker and freindlier than it used to. I tried three distro's including SUSE 10.1 and Linspire, and I have to say that Linspire wins hands down on ease of use. It installed flawlessy on two differently configured machines, and although the commercial CNR software download system may not appeal to open source purists, it does work and does add the value of convenience to the process of getting software installed. Because the build pre-dated Open Office 2.0, it is shipped with version 1.1, but CNR has a free update available and a download installs the new product automatically replacing the earlier version. Anyone reasonably famililiar with Windows will not have a problem working in the modified KDE GUI. If you don't want to fuss about, I can thoroughly recommend Linspire.

This distro gets 10/10 from me. Or 5 Stars, even. Before you can truly realise its power, go ahead and install ALL THE OTHER DISTROS out there (including Xandross). Something will be 'broken' in each one - usually sound, adsl or graphics.

Once you've binned all your Linux discs, install Linspire (in around ten minutes) and everything just works! Everything. You want Xine to work properly? Download it via CNR. This truly is the best Linux distribution I have EVER used.

5 out of 5 stars Lazy Linux is called Linspire   March 28, 2006

I have used Windows from 95 to Me but became so tired of the servicing required to keep it running.

We then decided to use an alternative operating system called Linux, Red Hat, SuSe, Ubuntu were all duly tried and for my family and i did not work as required.

I then found Linspire and have not looked back, its ease of install and use is amazing.

Linspire has been installed on all 3 home systems the kids, wife and mine and is being used for everything that a system can be used for with everything just working out of the box.

The install of software by CnR (Click'n'Run) makes this an ideal choice for all the family as all the family can now install the programs that they would like to use.

all in all if a easy (lazy) Linux system is required for all home, office and family use then i would look no further then Linspire ...

Linspire is a great alternative OS. It will appeal to the type of individual that can sit in front of any computer and start working regardless of which type of OS is installed.

Of course Linux has been around a few years now and has often been referred to as the OS that computer geeks use. Linspire is the OS that I and many others have been waiting for. A Linux with the ease of use that we are used to on MS windows.

Sick and tired battling malicious software as well as the cost of software you need. Linspire's approach is a good one. For a start you get the basic package that includes all the software you need to get started including an office suite of programs (Open Office) compatible with industry standard MS Office 'word' and 'excel' are two examples. Lets not quibble too much on this however, Open Office delivers the killer punch or if you like two. Its free and is available across the three major platforms Linux, Mac and of course Windows. You need never look with envy at an MS Office windows user again.

The one major feature you may like is the Click and Run (CNR) facility. You don't go out and buy software for this OS. You simply click and connect to the CNR warehouse which provides you with a choice of 3000 or so software titles all of which are open source most of which are free to download CNR yearly subscription charges apply but this is cheap and the choice is yours. To help you make your mind up browse to Linspire.com there you will find all the answers you need if you are considering the switch from Windows.

A downside is the lack of Web cam support in this current version. Though I am confident that this and other shortfalls that have prevented others from making the switch will be put right in version 6. I know one thing it won't cost me anything to upgrade. Look forward to watching all those XP users queueing up for the Vista launch.
