5 out of 5 stars Perfect Solution   September 28, 2008
Martin Haworth (UK)
I tried this with a little trepidation both as I was moving up to Vista and had heard scary comments about it and also some of the comments on here which were less than optimistic. I was not helped because initially i only used on monitor and one internet connection!

Still, that all being said, this product worked exactly and I mean exactly as it said on the box, with only a little bitty leaflet to tell you what to do. I shifted 90GB (yes, really, bearing in mind that it compacts the files by around 50% as it loads it (quirkily!) into the 'removal van', unpacking at the arrival end) by setting it going overnight. When I came down in the morning it was done, with my new PC showing the desktop picture that previously was on the old PC.

Of course a couple of the wackier internet marketing products didn't work, because I had older copies that were Vista - I will be going back to the manufacturers for upgrades to those.

No, follow the instructions carefully and to the letter - watch out because a couple of the come up on the screens which you need to do in sequence.

I give it a resounding 5!

5 out of 5 stars Saved a lot of time and trouble   June 22, 2008

We were moving from an XP box to a new Vista PC. The instructions were clear and concise. The limitations of the product are also clearly stated - you may need to reactivate some licence keys on the new box, and don't expect device drivers to come over.

Bearing these limitations in mind, I will state that the programme did what is said on the tin for us - user accounts, passwords, personal profiles, programmes, document folders and structures, all came across neatly, including desktop wallpapers! We are reactivating licence keys as necessary, this is not too much trouble, and have installed printers, digicams etc on the new machine.

It took about 4 hours in total including the installation process - about 3h30 to transfer about 19GB of data, via the silver-plated LapLink cable supplied in the box.

All in all, this will have save us many hours of manually copying files and reinstalling programmes. Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Beware! Not compatible with 64-bit version of Vista   March 31, 2008

It does not work with the 64-bit version of Vista. It does not clearly state this either on the Amazon description nor on the product box itself. Since complaining to the makers Laplink, I see they have now added this warning on their own website.

1 out of 5 stars Not very good at all   March 16, 2008

I have an absolutely standard Win XP system..Dell. I used PC Mover and basically it appeared to work ok but almost everything I tried to do on the new PC was fraught with gremlins of one sort or another. Could not get the PC to work when selecting Restart (had done previously). Kept losing connection to the Internt via Broadband: in parallel had the old PC online and it was fine. Internet Explorer opened two instances and they got really messed up, etc etc etc. I am quite PC literate but this one defeated me. SO I took the option of backing it all out. The PC is now working fine, all of the above problems and others are resolved.
Basically I WANT MY MONEY BACK.

5 out of 5 stars Did exactly what it promised on the box.   June 14, 2007

I read the review on this site and a number of other adverse reviews and thought long and hard about using this. However, one technical review said that so long as you are careful to follow the instructions to the letter, it works fine.

I was transferring from an XP laptop to Vista.

I started by doing a thorough clean up of the XP computer. I chucked out all the Apps I never use and ran a cleanup and a virus check on all the rest. I used Quick Clean to get rid of all excess junk, leftovers, double entries etc. I also ran a registry clean up. When I was sure that I had done all that I could, I gave the whole machine an exhaustive defrag with a specialist programme.

Next, I did the same for the Vista Computer. As it was almost straight out of the box, this only took very little time.

The next thing - and according to what I read - the most important thing was to disable all background running applications on both computers, paying particular attention to virus programs and firewalls. Also, I was told, it was vital to disable screensavers and power 'time-outs' etc. This I did. Only then did I load up the software as instructed on both machines, connect the USB 2.0 cable and left the machines to 'chat to each other' for three and a half hours.

I was fully expecting at least one or two problems BUT NO. Three and a half hours later, everything was safely transferred (or rather copied) from one machine to the other. What had taken a week when I traded up a few years back from Windows 98 to XP took only half a Saturday to complete and three hours of that was spent watching the Test Match on TV while the actual transfer happened. What a fantastic product! I have nothing but praise for it.
