Worthy for keeping Data safe November 23, 2008 John You'd be surprised how much sensitive personal private data the average computer user has on their computer. Identity theft is now becoming a worrying and real risk, so it's best to lock your data away. Steganos safe 2008 is one such program where you can store all of your personal files into a secure encrypted area, so no one can access them, except you because you'll have the password. The software is very easy to use, so novice users need not worry about it being complicated. Steganos allows anything up to 256GB's of storage for each safe created, so you just select the storage capacity that is best suited for your needs. Once you have created your safe, it's just a matter of copying your files into it. Once you have your files secured in the safe that you have created, you just click close to secure and open when you want with your password. Steganos safe 2008 has more Security features still, namely a File Shredder and the option to create what is called a Portable safe. Firstly, I'll talk about the portable safe and I must admit I like this feature very much. The software allows you to create a safe on a USB Flash Drive, which can be transported around with you and opened on another computer. This is a very handy because Flash Drives are easy to lose putting you data at risk and also convenient because you can access your files somewhere else with that flash drive, without the need to have steganos installed on that particular computer. Secondly, I'll talk about the shredder feature, which is another great tool in fighting identity theft. When you delete a file from your hard drive, that file can be recovered with the many Data recovery programs that are on the market, so to prevent this you need to securely delete these files. To prevent recovery Steganos includes a few different options of file overwriting deletion methods , but the highest sercurity setting is also the slowest. Steganos also offers an option of securely deleting your hard drives free space, which is recommended so that previously deleted files can not be recovered. A few tips on using Steganos safe, always use a password that is hard to guess and not something simple like a pet name etc, also the password should include a mix of letters and numbers for better sercurity. Steganos will warn you if it detects that your password is weak, which is a handy feature to have. Steganos does also include a password generator, if you prefer the software to choose a random password for you, but I personally like to stick with a password of my choosing. Another thing to mention is that you will need an Internet connection, so that you can activate the software online and download the sercurity certificate, but it's a painless process. This is very common with most software these days, as it's to stop pirating. Steganos Safe 2008 is a great piece of software to install and user friendly, so I recommend it.
Don't bother buying this! July 19, 2008 J. P. Mackey (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This product sounds good - but is a serious pain to try and get up and running on your PC! Installing is quick, but then the problems start - I was offered an upgrade to the latest version and thought this was sensible so went ahead. The subsequent installation sent my ant-virus program and firewall application into a frenzy and I had to reinstall from scratch. When it eventually is up and running it takes forever to create a reasonable size 'safe' and even on my modern, memory rich, PC it slowed everything down to a crawl while that process took place. Frankly, this is a poor product and very disappointing - there must be better products out there to do the job and I'm off to find them now. But first I'll uninstall this and chuck it in the bin.
It answered my data storage needs March 27, 2008 Matt Richards (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Having normally relied on a USB stick in order to keep my personal data and work files seperate from information stored and openly available on the home PC i was keen to see how this could work as an alternative. I like the fact that not only could i have a safe with all my data that only i could access it with a password, the other benefit was of course being able to use the portable safe option on my USB stick which meant at home or at work on any PC i could access information. The product did exactly what i needed it too for my needs allowing me to create as many safes as i wanted and it didn't take long.
I am very disappointed in this software. February 19, 2008 Truth Teller (Birmingham UK) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have used Steganos Safe 5 for several years and was delighted with it. But now I have bought Safe 2008 from Amazon.Co.UK and am very disappointed with it. The main reason I bought it was because the newer version had much larger storage capacity. Amazon sold it for 22.99 which is a very good price. BUT it needs a complicated certificate downloaded from the Internet to use it. No mention of this in the advert or on the box. I wanted it to use on my 'old' computer, that I was letting the family use. I did not want them to be able to see my old files. That is what it is for obviously. But this 'old' computer is not on the Internet. So I cannot get a certificate, and it therefore cannot be used. Massively disappointing. If you want to be able to use this software you have to be on the Internet, and go through the aggro of downloading it.......with firewall, anti-virus problems etc. None of this was necessary with Steganos 5! Also, if the company does not give a certificate (for any technical reasons; or because the company has stopped trading for example) you have a piece of software that can never be used. In addition to this, their so-called 'support' does not appear to reply to emails; and since this is part of what I paid for.......again.......very disappointing. Finally, it appears that all the contents of the Safe can be lost. If the product is 'uninstalled' (assuming you have been lucky enough to ever get it installed in the first place) all the documents will be lost. So it is NOT a safe Safe.......it is a very vulnerable unsafe so-called Safe. Very Very Disappointing.
