3 out of 5 stars Good product, beware of the company   June 29, 2008
Depressed (UK)
I have used Norton/Symantec products for over 10 years and love the products, but why does the company have to be so dodgy.
Firstly, when the 1 year updates end, they want you to subscribe or upgrade, but they don't value you as a customer. Year after year I find they want more money to simply upgrade than you can actually buy a new product for. Last year they wanted 39.99 just to send me a number to continue my subscription, yet I bought a brand new product, boxed, posted etc etc from Amazon for 24.99.
I have bought the new 2008 product this year from a shop for 29.99. I bought this 4 months early because I wanted the free System Works & Go Back. I have used this for many years, but my current product didn't work when I upgraded to Vista. Rip off number two.
So I looked at the box - for XP and Vista, asked to view the documentation - saw an article about using Go Back, and I made the purchase. No Go Back !!! Three messages swapped with Customer Services shows that a/ Go Back does not work at all with Vista and is no longer supplied. And b/ they don't care that I feel ripped off.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed   June 26, 2008
phil (uk)
Even though this product claims to guard against antispyware, when my computer was infected, the scan failed to locate and fix the problem. When calling in, I was informed that it would cost me 60GBP to have the problem fixed as it was a `value added service'. As I had the same problem in two computers, this would have been 120GBP extra to have the problem sorted. Rather than pay this I downloaded the AVG 29 day trial software, and with the first scan found 60 odd problems, and fixed the problem I had.

Norton has seen the last of me.

3 out of 5 stars Slows your computer down   May 6, 2008

I've used Norton Internet Security for years and it's never let me down. Easy to set up and use, does what it says on the packet.
However, it has slowed my system down to a crawl and I've put up with it! Why for example, would you want to virus check a document which you've just been working on not two seconds earlier which you've reopened. But no more, instead of renewing my subscription I changed my Internet Security provider. After much research I've installed Kaspersky and what a difference, my machine has returned to normal speed.

1 out of 5 stars Regular lapses of security   February 22, 2008

I have used this product(NIS 2007) for a year now and have been forced to change my internet security because the subscription has lapsed and also due to the fact that I was disatisfied with a number of aspects to do with the product. I also have Norton 2005 which didn't seem so bad.

1. Being forced to activate the product online many times. For some reason unkown to me, the antivirus switched itself off until I activated it by registering online. Once should have been enough, but I was forced to do this every week or so, during the first few months that I was using the product. Presumably while I was doing this my computer was at risk.

2. More recently there has been an error with both the active real-time antivirus checking and also the anti-phishing. Both of these have been switched off. When I have logged on there is a warning by Norton Internet security, and you are given the opportunity to fix the fault by clicking on a Fix button. The fault cannot be fixed by doing this as it says there is already a process running. So you have to restart the computer to fix this fault. This can be really irritating if you are in a hurry to do something and this fault occurs at least once a week.

3. If your subscription is due to expire within the next month you are continually nagged to renew your subscription for 39. Norton Internet Security shows this as a fault that you can only fix by renewing your subscription.

4. You use to be able to renew your updates manually even if the subscription expires. This is no longer possible as they have changed the format of the download. You can download the file but you cannot execute it to update the virus definitions.

5. The software does not uninstall properly. I was concerned that my computer was still running very slowly, despite the fact that I had uninstalled the software. The Taskmanager indicated 50% CPU useage even when I was doing nothing. I then ran HijackThis, and found a number of Symantec processes, which were invisible to Taskmanager. When I deleted these using HackThis, the performance improved dramatically.

6. I am currently using a trial version of AVG Internet security. This seems to be working fine at the moment - certainly it has given me no problems like those experienced with Norton. Also they provide a 3 license product that works on a range of older operating systems. My main computer is using XP professional, and the old one is using 2000 professional.

I think I will be buying AVG Internet security (3 licences - 2 year subsciption, for not much more than renewing a 1 year subscription with Norton)

I bought a twelve month package for 49 in October 2007 and now Norton are insisting that I renew (January 2008). They are impossible to contact and now their automated system will not update as they say my contract has run out.
