1 out of 5 stars Install/uninstall disaster   January 5, 2009
Eric Baker (London)
I used to have a collection of free security software on my XP desktop: Zone Alarm, AVG, Spyware Terminator and WinPatrol. No infections but they could sometimes be rather noisy, eg complaining about each other. So I was glad to review McAfee for the Vine program and found it a more peaceful experience. No problems other than full scans I hadn't asked for.

Then, with just a few months of McAfee remaining, I got F-Secure to review. I uninstalled McAfee then installed F-Secure. I put in the long product key but the install froze around 90% through. After a very long wait I killed the inactive install process fssetup and it claimed to have installed successfully. Rebooted (one of many). F-Secure was there but kept failing its validation attempts - "no connection found" yet IE7, Outlook & Firefox connected fine. It was showing itself as "Expired" (ie providing no protection) despite the valid key, so as I was unprotected I had to remove it. But it kept on looping round "Uninstall failed" even after more reboots. Control Panel Add/Remove wouldn't remove it either. In desperation I used Task Manager to stop all fs... processes then manually deleted all the files I could in the F-Secure folder - but even after going into safe mode there were five f-secure dlls still running ("Access denied"). Scary stuff!

I re-installed McAfee with no problems and after five days (admittedly over New Year) F-secure support came up with a removal tool that seems to have got rid of the remaining dlls. Hopefully also the registry debris. But what a pain F-secure proved to be for me, with its inability to install correctly or connect to the internet or uninstall itself. Extremely badly behaved software. No way would I try installing it again after that experience. Obviously this is not the typical user experience with F-secure or they'd have gone out of business. But it's disappointing that they made such a mess of installing, validating and uninstalling on my perfectly ordinary XP SP3 machine. Anyone less techie could have been left with unsecured internet access for five days. I merely wasted several hours.

5 out of 5 stars Cracking piece of software!   January 3, 2009

This is the second bit of antivirus ive reviewed in the last 12 months and its the best by far!

Its quick to upload, the on screen instructions are clear and easy to follow with great screen shots for extra added benefit. The scanning time isnt too long either and it doesnt slow down the pc so other programs still run as quickly. For the computer literate the advanced settings are a good way to protect yourself more securely. and even for the computer illiterate you couldnt mess up the setup its just to easy!

The F secure Program is a great piece of software cheap easy to use and great protection in an unsecure world!

4 out of 5 stars It's the virus checker of choice for me - but it's not perfect and it's expensive for more than three PCs   December 27, 2008

I originally got F-Secure free for home-use from my workplace [UCL], so I've got used to the software over the last 8 years. The software installs, and importantly uninstalls easily, leaving no nasty aftertaste as was common with Norton Anti-Virus. The only things you have to really remember to do is to go to 'advanced, firewall, settings' and select your network card and register it as trusted [otherwise it'll be blocked], plus switch off Windows Firewall as FSecure has it's own superior one. This software is expensive to update every year though, so I tend to keep the old engines for a year or two - you do need internet access to get the constant virus updates for your particular engine [software version]. I haven't noticed much of a hit on PC speed with F-Secure installed and I leave the virus checker running during disk defragments etc with no problems. F-Secure does take an age to load [1 minute+] on start-up though, and there's little point in touching the PC until the little F-Secure triangle appears in the Windows task-bar.

I now work at Oxford Uni and get Sophos free from work. However for home use I've stuck with paying out my own cash for F-Secure as it offers far more control in [un]blocking software. With Sophos it can be a life or death stuggle to install software it takes exception to [which can be a lot of odd scientific packages that go places consumer software doesn't] and it offers little user control. With F-Secure, once you get used to it, you can easily unblock files that have been incorrectly assigned. The only downside with F-Secure is that it it's expensive when you have 4 PCs in the house, and it's often over-zealous in bashing suspect code. We have many simple Big Fish/Spin-Top type games and their dial-home DRM is frequently detected as spyware and the game gets blocked - but you can put the exe file on the F-Secure trusty list and perhaps switch off 'application control' to stop this. That's F-Secure's strong point, user control, you switch on/off bits while still leaving the basic anti-virus software running. However unblock nasty code and your PC will be at risk, so tread carefully. F-Secure has: Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Spam, Anti-Phishing, Anti-Rootkit, Firewall, DeepGuard 2.0, Parental Control, Automatic Updates [via internet], and offers 'fast and easy installation for Windows XP and Vista'.

That said, it takes a while to get over the learning curve, as there's lots you can twiddle about with. In fact my daughter's laptop recently refused to connect to the internet. I checked the approx ~100 allowed/blocked files in F-Secure Application Control and all seemed fine. Yonks later, after re-installing the laptop wireless drivers and 'unloading' F-Secure made no difference, I had another look. In Application Control I found that Internet Explorer was actually on the naughty list [blocked], and I'd missed it the first time. Two seconds later, with IE unblocked [Allow], the internet was working again. Until then, the laptop was telling me the internet connection was fine, but Internet Explorer just came up with the standard 'can't display' page. My daughter had obviously answered unwisely during a IE update [I've now installed Mozilla FireFox to double check next time]. At least I had the control in F-Secure to find out what was wrong and correct it. So I'll give it 4 stars. It's just the high pricing that loses it a star - although it's often cheaper to buy FSecure from re-sellers such as Amazon. However for just a few quid more than a single [full price] licence you can get a three PC home licence pack. And so far I haven't had a virus hit on any of our home PCs for over 10 years using this product.

There is in my opinion only one other AV solution that tops this and that is more of a commercial product. F-secure is non intrusive it doesn't suck the life out of your PC and it keeps itself up to date in a clearly scientifically researched environment. I would heartily recommend this solution above all others barring the other I mentioned.
The other is better orientated to SMe's and is quite a bit more expensive and so I use F-Secure and have done for years despite having reviewed and worked with others.

5 out of 5 stars Good product that does it's job very well   October 24, 2008

I have had F-Secure for several years and recently upgraded to this latest version. I have a 1.8Ghz dual core with 1Gb RAM and I have not noticed any decrease in performance.

I've also had a search around on the web and a company called 'Virus Bulletin' have tested a load of products and F-Secure came out second overall. As far as I'm concerned it does the job better than most and it is there to stop viruses at the end of the day, so even if it did slow my PC down a bit I wouldn't mind!

All in all a good product that I have installed and forgotten about which is what I want.
