2 out of 5 stars Made my computer Extremely slow - don't get if your computer is not at least dual core.   January 7, 2009
Silverfrog (Leeds UK)
McAfee is as well known and long standing as Norton but how does it compare to the rest? On installation you have the option to either install from disc or download from the internet. The last option downloads the installation file in about 10 minutes and is a recommended option to ensure the most up to date version. I'm assuming that McAfee is clever enough to know to protect the computer whilst you download this information but I'm not sure of this. It does do a quick virus scan after download though and installation is really quite lengthy (about 35 minutes to fully install). At the end of installation, you can sign up to obtain 12 months of updated protection which is unusual that you need to sign up for. The Security Centre is rather annoying as it is unclear where to enter your details to sign up - there are no clear fields to enter your information. I had to exit the initial Security Centre window and register via the official website (open up the Security Centre and click on My Account which will take you to the website to register).

McAfee Total Protection covers Antivirus, antispyware, firewall, identity theft protection, antiphishing parental control. It also has SiteAdvisor which identifies and prevents you from clicking on harmful links.

I had a heck of a time taking off the parental controls as I don't have kids and don't need this function. McAfee kept on stating that I wasn't protected even though all other functions were secure. Another thing I found very annoying was that it started a background scan without me asking it to and since my computer is only a single core that is about 3 years old, it ran REALLY slowly. I couldn't even turn off the background scanning!! Overall I'm very disappointed in this software - if you have dual core, then it's probably fine but don't consider this if it's an older computer. The settings were ridiculously hard to navigate and I couldn't easily find my way to stop scans. The system seems very secure against most threats you might encounter which is just about all this has going for it - apart from it's name.

4 out of 5 stars Very good piece of software   January 7, 2009
Mr. L. N. Taylor (Essex, UK)
I've tested a number of PC protection packages in the past few months, but I have to say that Mcafee has always been my first choice. This was easy to install and actually found a number of irregularities that my previous Norton package had missed. I have noticed my PC runs fractionally slower than before, but I am reassured by the comprehensive coverage this package offers. Mcafee identifies problem sites that Norton ignored, and unlike Norton does not seem to have caused a problem with Windows Live Mail. Like one of the previous reviewers, I cannot understand why Mcafee feel the need to provide such large packaging for one CD, quite ridiculous!! I too noticed that most of the software seems to be downloaded directly from Mcafee's website, and not from anything written to the CD. I'm not sure whether you can subscribe directly through the Mcafee website and download all you need without the CD. If so, you'll be saving a huge waste of packaging. That aside though, this is a very good package indeed and can be used on up to 3 PCs. At 29 its a real bargain for peace of mind!

4 out of 5 stars As good as   January 4, 2009

Most of the others out there, it works it finds things and warns you that software is trying to access the internet or your computer files do you want to let it etc etc etc. A very comprehensive suite that didn't slow down my PC at all and did a decent job of protecting my PC. We also use this at work to protect the entire works system and it again does exactly what it says on the tin. I found this to be much better than the most recent versions of Norton that I have used (less resource hungry) but I am not sure why or how I prefer Kaspersky which is my standard anti virus, but I would recommend it especially at this price with 3 users.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive security software.   December 30, 2008

I set about installing McAfee Total Protection 2009 on my laptop this morning, I uninstalled PC Tools Internet security first and then started the McAfee install and all seemed well at first, the program installed and updated but after a couple of minutes running McAfee I was faced with a warning notice telling me my subscription had expired?? The protection had also been turned off.

Having had McAfee installed BEFORE the PC Tools software I thought this must be something to do with it, I uninstalled Total Protection and after a restart I ran McAfee clean up tool, which can be downloaded from McAfee's web site, this cleans out any remnants of previous McAfee software, stray product keys and registry entries.

After another restart I set about installing Total Protection 2009 again, this time all went well with no subscription problems, the latest updates installed automatically and the security centre started running.

You can install Total Protection on 3 computers, you have to have an online account which you create after the installation process.

McAfee Total Protection 2009 looks no different to McAfee's internet security 2008, it is probably under the skin where the differences lie, more powerful virus scanning and a stronger firewall. The program seems to work just as well as previous versions, OK so my laptop is not cutting edge and is a couple of years old but McAfee sits in the background without slowing it down in any way. It does slow boot up time though.

I like the network management feature of McAfee , you can see exactly what computers and additional devices are connected to your network and if there are any intruders hacking into it, you can block any unwanted computer or device on the network by marking as a friend or intruder, if you just don't want your Son or Daughter to access the network or the internet then you can block the PC that they are using.

McAfee Site Advisor is another good feature, warning you of fraudulent web sites, adult content or virus likely sites with a simple traffic light system, I missed this feature with PC Tools Internet security.

As the title of the software suggest it is supposed to be total protection and is a very comprehensive package, so includes anti-virus, anti spam, anti spy-ware, firewall, anti phishing, indentity theft protection, parental controls, McAfee site advisor. There is also a bonus software that you can download, McAfee anti-theft encryption software that gives your valuable files password protection, but is a 30 day trial!!

Backup and file recovery utilities are included in Total Protection 2009, but these have been included in previous McAfee internet security versions.

Time will tell if McAfee Total Protection is as the name suggests but I have been fairly pleased with McAfee's software on previous occasions, and doubt there will be any problems, their customer support is very good with live online chat with technicians that can help with any problems, I had a problem with my McAfee online account and this was sorted in no time through the live chat system.

The installation problems were probably my own fault, having not run the clean up tool before hand, but the slow boot up time after installation takes a star form my rating.

4 out of 5 stars Another year of protection...   December 30, 2008

What can you say about McAfee? I think they've pretty much got it sussed now. So this time around I stuck the CD in the drive and it all does the rest. Everything gets installed in about 30 minutes and it's all upated and registered online before you know it.

Does it work? Well, McAfee has never let me down so far. OK, everything might be faster without a virus and spam checker but who wants to take the chance?

One point - the box was the standard software sized cardboard box and inside it was just one CD - so why the waste of packaging? Also, I am pretty sure that almost everything that ended up on my hard drive was downloaded from the Internet, and makes me wonder what exactly was on the CD anyway. So beware, this software will not install without an Internet connection (it does say this on the box)!
