Excellent Professional Illustration Software December 12, 2008 W. Bailey (London) As an illustrator I moved into working digitally last year, but became disillusioned after my work became a bit flat and cold using Photoshop, especially with regards to colour. Frustrated, especially after investing heavily in digital hardware with a G5, A4 Wacom and Eizo monitor I was even considering ditching the digital and going back to oldschool paints and inks. However purchasing Painter has been a major breakthrough for me. I am new to the software and still learning, though it is easy to pick up the basics if you know Photoshop, but already I am getting the depth and warmth back into my work that was so desperately missing. It works terrifically alongside Photoshop, which I find to be superior for building up drawings due to its strong ability to create, shape and transform images. But where I find Photoshop to be too cold and brutal when it comes to colour and finish, Painter excels at creating organic sculptural and textured surfaces and for mixing and blending colour, which is where I am rediscovering the warmth and depth from in my work. At the end of the day, whether this software works for you or not really depends on how you work as an artist. I suspect that people from graphic design backgrounds might not be quite so impressed with it as I am as an illustrator coming from a fine art background. Either way you can download a full working version from the Corel website - I would highly recommend doing this. Try it out, see where your work goes - if you like the results buy the licence from them as it's 20 quid or so cheaper than buying it from Amazon (sorry Amazon). Be warned though - this software is demanding on your hardware. You need a powerful/up to date computer to run it properly (ie a core2 duo with a couple of gigs of ram). Other reviewers have commented on it being buggy. I assume that they are talking about the lag you can get when you have been working on a large image for a while. Whilst this is a bit irritating it is easily resolved by closing and opening the project, though of course you won't be able to back-step. All-in-all I am loving this software - it really works for me, and at 135 from the Corel website I think it's pretty reasonably priced too.
Brilliant, if a bit temperamental.. November 10, 2008 W. Mckenzie (Essex, UK) Very creative graphics package with tons of great tools and effects to explore. Certainly the nearest thing on computer to the freedom of the artist's canvas. Good compatibility with Photoshop, CorelDraw etc. Unfortunately not completely bug-free, with some brush-lag and occasional (if rare) hang-ups. Also very demanding on computer resources, needing lots of RAM and a fast hard disc to run efficiently, plus a Wacom graphics tablet. Slick user interface (very Photoshop-like) disguises a fairly steep learning curve, but eminently worth persevering. At the present price point, it's terrific value for money. My upgrade version came complete with handbook, extras and tutorials. With excellent prompt delivery from Amazon (as usual).
Brilliant for all artists August 22, 2008 Mr. S. T. Foster (UK) I've been using the Painter Essentials 3 with my Wacom products for the past year and only recently did I become aware of the existence of Painter X. I'm still using the trial version but I shall be registering before the month is out. It's superb, the brushes are amazing and produce some highly realistic results. It's a lot easier to use than photoshop but I guess that one's more for photograph touch up stuff. I love the rotating canvas tool, very VERY handy. It does have a few bugs though, be aware of that. Nothing to really get upset about though.
Painter X is great March 21, 2008 Mr. NJ RICHARDS 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Painter X is a fantastic upgrade from painter IX. The only problem is using the line tool outside of an image which crashes it. Otherwise the ability to turn the canvas and draw as you would do on paper is something truly fantastic. Problems with brush lag etc are removed if your not working on massive file sizes. I use this program everyday as a professional concept artist and have since stopped drawing on paper. It really is very good, especially if you take time and discover the brush settings and parameters that can be changed to make it work for you. Combine this with photoshop CS and you really can do anything. BTW if Photoshop could spin the canvas then it would be the winner of the two by miles.
First time Corel has worked for me February 1, 2008 P. D. Fretwell I've had this trial program sitting on my hard drive for ages. Never bothered to install it since downloading it from Corels website. The pain and anguish of their Paint Shop Pro since taking it from JASC stopped me using it. However in the past two hours I've really enjoyed using it. Very easy to get on with and has none of the symtoms of using processor power that PSP currently has. I got this as a bundle with Corel Draw - I won't bother registering it as I'm happy with Photoshop and Illustrator so pointless paying for this. But I would recommend it as a cheaper vector graphics program. Oh that's only for Corel Draw - Painter is a Bitmap program.
