5 out of 5 stars Love It ... Great Fun   July 10, 2008

Now I'm no musician in fact I can't play a note and I have a singing voice like a cat being strangled. Despite these obvious shortcomings, back in the 80's some mates and I formed a band. None of us could sing, one could play guitar and one the keyboard with 1 finger. We recorded 2 albums of songs to amuse ourselves and our mates.

Now 20 odd years later we're all pushing 40 and 2 of us reformed the band, the two of us that couldn't play a note. So I bought this program and the Sound Essentials 6 pack and the 2 of us sat down to write some songs. And its a piece of cake. Thousands of different backing tracks are possible in all sorts of styles. We've already done a Reggae number, Hip Hop and a Bluesy Rock type one.

You could even treat as a game if you like and hours of fun are possible. Try out by downloading the free Music Maker Basic package. If you love music and fancy a laugh then its well worth it.

Oh yeah i suppose if you really wanted you could do some serius music as well. There are loads of options to mess about with and settings to tweak. I haven't got a clue what most of them mean but then again like I said earlier I'm no musician.

I have just bought Magix Music Maker 14 after previously having other magix production software. I found this very easy to use, if you have used magix software before then you can pick it up quite quickly and produce things which sound pretty good.

After sorting out the initial glitches I haven't had any other problems.

It's all rather ominous when software developers see fit to include a "Crash Guard" popup dialog in their program - particularly when you see it quite regularly. Doesn't bode well at all.

So has been our first impression of Music Maker 14. The crashes are a shame as we do own a previous version (Music Maker 2005 Deluxe) - and this on the whole did a good job of producing tracks without falling over on us that much.

Music Maker 14 on the other hand is a tempestuous offspring and will when you least expect it, throw up the crash guard; this occured most often on the synthesizers, nortorious of the lot being the 'Atmospheric' one, while the rest seemed a bit more stable. Also, rapid selection of the instraments caused the program to hang. While you may say don't do that then, we do expect software to tackle this kind of handling in its stride.

Of what we managed, we can say that the 'Beatbox' and 'Drum and Base' sythesizers offered a good deal of personal creativy, before resorting to the samples provided to overlay your tracks.

I suppose of you don't rush around the software, clicking away, the dreaded 'crash guard' could be kept at bay. You can create some great music with this if you don't mind it crashing, but we suggest saving regularly before doing anything drastic!

We would also note that registration seems quite a drawn out process, taking ages to get into Magix site to fill in details, so unless you really want to, we wouldn't bother with it (my main reason was to see if there was an update for the program, but there wasn't - so pointless really).
